On the right bank of the Moselle, the villages of Jouy, Féy, Corny through the woods

Most of this beautiful loop takes place in woodland. It will take you through the villages of Jouy-aux-Arches, Féy and Corny-sur-Moselle, passing through the main woods of these villages and offering beautiful views over the Moselle valley.
Good waterproof footwear recommended.

Description of the walk

Start from the Jouy cemetery car park, in the easy parking area on Chemin d'Auche.

(S/E) On leaving the car park, turn right along the cemetery into Rue Clemenceau. Continue straight ahead, ignoring the paths and perpendicular roads, until you reach a sloping three-way junction with Rue Notre-Dame. Turn right, crossing carefully to reach the pavement opposite, and walk up Rue Notre-Dame for around 100 metres to the crossroads before the Rue Debussy junction with Chemin de Noinerue.

(1) Follow the path on the left at no. 2, passing between houses and continuing straight ahead. Ignore the red and white signs and continue straight ahead until you reach Rue du Bassin Romain. You can see the remains of the Gallo-Roman aqueduct on your left.

(2) Turn right up Rue du Bassin Romain and gradually climb into the woods overlooking the village of Jouy. After a wide bend to the left, reach a house and take the path on the right that runs alongside it to the left. Follow this path, which climbs steeply until you reach a large meadow. After passing a property, turn right onto a dirt track.

(3) Turn right and follow this path for a long distance. Ignore the side paths until you reach a tarmac road and a large field on the left. Continue straight ahead, passing a base station, until you reach the end of this road.

(4) Take the path that climbs to the left towards the forest of the ouvrage Saint-Blaise. Before you reach the wooded area, ignore the path to the right and stay on the path that goes deep into the forest. Stay on this path, which climbs straight up through the woods until you reach a ridge that links two fields. Take the path that goes right into the forest, keeping the large field on your right, until you reach a crossroads of paths.

(5) Ignore the path on the left that leads to Fort Saint-Blaise and take the path opposite, keeping the large field on your right. Ignore all the paths to the left and stay on the main path, always keeping the field to your right. After passing a dozen or so trees with bird shelters, leave the wood to reach a vineyard. In the distance, below, you will see the village of Féy, which you need to reach.

(6) Take the path to the right and walk along the vineyard, reaching a field with a caravan and follow this path to the left until you reach a tarmac farm road. Turn right up this steep road until you reach a house with a gate.

(7) Take the footpath that descends to the left alongside the property and stay on this downhill path until you reach the village of Féy at a crossroads.

(8) Turn right onto Route de Corny, cross at the pedestrian crossing to reach the other pavement and continue along this road along the cycle path to leave the village. Stay on this path until you reach a residential area after a 90° bend.

(9) Go past the first house, turn right and ignore the first street on the left until you reach Rue du Fond des Près. Turn left, go to the end of this section and turn left, then right to stay on Rue du Fond des Prés. Continue along this road, passing all the houses until you reach the entrance to a forest.

(10) Turn left to enter the wood and stay on this forest road. After about 400 m, ignore this road, which is no longer maintained, and take the path that climbs to the left. Stay on this path until you reach the first crossroads.

(11) Turn right and continue uphill. After some 300 m, the path splits in two. You can take either one or the other, as they merge a little later. The path on the right is faster but steeper. Continue uphill until you reach a large hiking junction.

(12) Turn right and follow the red and white GR®5F signs. Descend along this path until you reach a large junction with wide ruts, turn right before you reach the clearing (the Red and White markings are sparse at this point) and continue downhill. After about 600 m the path becomes a small stream (waterproof footwear recommended) until it crosses a stream with a small bridge. Continue straight on, following the red and white markings, up this path until you reach a crossroads in an open area.

(13) Go straight ahead, ignoring the track that descends to the right, and stay on the farm track until you reach the first house in the village of Corny-sur-Moselle. Stay on the GR® (red and white markings) which runs alongside the houses on the left. Walk down Chemin du Banneau past the gardens to reach Rue du Haut du Mont at a small car park.

(14) Turn right, then left at the second turning into Rue de Metz, the village's main street. Turn right, stay on the right-hand pavement and walk up the street until you reach a roundabout before leaving the village.

(15) Turn right onto Route de Féy, cross it, then go up this street and turn at the first left, Rue d'Auché. Stay on this road, ignoring all the side roads, until you reach the end of the housing estate. Follow this road into the forest, passing an agricultural shed and continuing along this main road. Continue straight on until you reach the first houses in the village of Féy, where you will find the cemetery car park (S/E).

A pleasant hike without too many difficulties. However, it is best avoided on very hot days.

Highlights: the view of the vineyards, the viewpoint at Marieulles, the final descent towards Corny where you can see Dornot and the forest of Fort St Blaise. (Two important sites in the Battle of Metz in 1944).

Weak points: Not a fan of long roads outside forests and villages. There is very little shade and it's rather monotonous, but there's no choice if you want to complete the circuit.

Be careful, though, as the author described, there is a 2-minute section where you cross a kind of small muddy stream. But on hot days, it's no problem as there isn't much water.

Apart from that, I didn't come across any hikers or mountain bikers. I did the route on a Sunday afternoon in four hours, with a few short breaks.
