Description of the walk

From Orrouy or Béthisy-Saint-Martin, on the D123, follow the signs for "Site gallo-romain de Champlieu" (Gallo-Roman site of Champlieu) or "Chapelle de Champlieu" (Chapel of Champlieu). Park in the grassy car park located at a crossroads, about 150 m after the Gallo-Roman site when coming from Béthisy, where you will find an information board with a map of walking routes.

(S/E) Before setting off to visit the site as you wish (the route provided is purely indicative). The remains of the temple are on the left-hand side of the road. The ancient theatre is on the right and you can walk around it via the top of the stands. The remains of the thermal baths are behind the theatre. After visiting the site, return to the car park.

(S/E) With your back to the stele marking the location of the French tank training camp during the First World War, take the path on the left towards the south and continue to the next fork.

(1) Turn left (GR®11B) and, at the next crossroads, take the second path on the right. Walk along the edge of the woods on your left, then take the first path on the right to see the Neolithic caves. When you reach another path, turn left. Then climb up into the woods and you will arrive at the end of Rue de la Garenne. Continue straight ahead and you will soon reach the D116, Rue de la Forêt.

(2) Follow it to the right (GR®11B) and enter Orrouy. Ignore Rue de la Tour and keep to the right. Pass in front of the Château d'Orrouy (15th century), which was the command post for the Champlieu tank camp, led by Jean Estienne, the father of the tank.

(3) At the entrance gate, turn left onto the path that runs along the enclosure and join a road (D123), Rue de la Vallée.
(4) Cross carefully and continue straight ahead. Ignore the paths on the left and continue to the edge of the woods.

(5) Turn right (GR®11B) and descend to the Rivière l'Automne. Cross the bridge, carefully cross the D123 and continue for a few metres on the D116, Rue de Montlaville.

(6) At the cross, take the path on the left, ignoring the paths on the left.

(7) Turn right, leaving the GR®11, and walk along a stream on your left. At the crossroads, turn left, then right to rejoin the GR®11.

(8) Continue right on the path that climbs up into the valley. When you leave the forest, cross the hamlet of Champlieu and arrive at the ruins of the Romanesque chapel of Champlieu (11th century).

(9) At the crossroads, turn left (Chaussée Brunehaut) and take the first path on the right. Enter the forest and continue straight ahead until you reach a cross-country track (GR®12).

(10) Turn right and then left at the next fork (viewpoint), then right at the next one. Cross three tracks and reach the fourth, at the bottom of the descent.

(11) Route de la Longue Pierre, turn right and reach a star-shaped crossroads, Carrefour de Champlieu.

(12) Follow the second path on the right (GR®12) and at the next crossroads, take the first path on the left (viewpoint), then straight ahead at the next one, Carrefour d'Acaste.

(13) Almost at the edge of the forest, turn left (GR®11B) and walk along the fields on your right until you reach the Champlieu car park (S/E).

Thank you for your message. Since then, I have made a small change to visit the megalithic cave(s), which means I will be walking an additional 300 metres.
