Description of the walk

Park in the Roc la Tour car park.
Access is via the Route de la Lyre at the Monthermé exit, heading towards Belgium.

(S/E) Take theGR® towards Roc la Tour (south). Leave the rock piles on your right and stay on theGR®. After a rocky descent, ignore the path on the right that leads back to the starting point.
Continue for about 50 metres, then leave theGR® by turning right onto a small path.
The path turns left and descends towards a wide forest track. Take it to the right until you reach Route de la Lyre.

(1) Go up to the right on the path and rejoin theGR® at a place called Auton.
Turn left towards Les Cerceaux and follow the marked path to Ruisseau de la Lyre.

(2) Leave theGR® again by fording the stream and climb up to the right. Walk along the stream until you reach a wide path.
Turn right, cross the Lyre on a footbridge and join the Route Forestière des Woieries.

(3) Take it to the right and turn left as soon as possible. Walk along a recent conifer plantation (on the right) for 150 metres, then take the first path on the left to reach the edge of the national forest on the edge of the Woieries pastureland. Follow this edge to the right until you reach a forest path.

(4) Continue straight ahead (yellow marked trail). Climb gently for about 30 metres and turn right to reach Tchar Scaille and the Six Chênons clearing.
Descend to the old hamlet and turn right. At the next fork, turn left for a short distance onto the Six Chênons forest road and look for a path on the left that joins the edge of the national forest.

(5) Follow it, then turn right along the edge of the forest plots and turn right again.
Then leave the path that branches off to the right and, after a descent, join a large forest path marked in yellow.

(6) Continue in the same direction. Several hundred metres further on, leave the marked path at the point where the sign points to the left. Continue straight ahead on a little-used path, keeping roughly the same direction until you reach a cross path.

(7) Descend to the right and join a path marked in yellow. Turn right onto the marked path. After passing through a wetland area, keep left and continue to a place called La Gire at the crossroads with the Route Forestière de la Dauphiné.

(8) Continue straight ahead on the marked path until you reach the junction with the Route Forestière des Éteignères. Stay on the path until you reach Chemin Lagard (signposted). Here you will rejoin theGR® trail. Take it to the left to quickly reach the Roc de la Tour car park (S/E).

Use of the GPX track is strongly recommended.
4 hunting areas crossed: Domaniale Château Regnault; Domaniale de la Croix Scaille; Thilay-Tournavaux; Monthermé, see calendar
Crossing the stream at the ford can be difficult during the rainy season, and it may be easier to connect (1) and (3) by road

Worth a visit

Le Roc la Tour is worth visiting again and again in all seasons and in all weathers.
Le Tchar Scaille, which means "schist cart" in Walloon, is a restaurant and educational site created by the owner of the property.

Great walk.
I made a small mistake at kilometre 2 due to the directions. It tells you to take a staircase in the rock, but I continued along the road. As I wasn't far off the route, the app warned me well after I had passed it.
Otherwise, good elevation and pleasant trails.
I recommend it.

Beautiful hike.
At the bottom of Le Roc, you should take the path on the right to get a good view of Le Roc.
After Les 6 Chenons, when you're on the trail, it's difficult to find the path on the left. I missed it and had to turn back.
At the end of the route, at the large trail junction, I couldn't find the path and there were also clear-cut areas where trees had been felled.

A very beautiful route, including a visit to Roc de la Tour and its panoramic views.
Be careful when cutting wood from point 5 onwards (it is difficult to find the path leading down south-east to point 6, as the path is covered with vegetation, at least at the start).
A dip in the Ardennes forest and a dose of calm!

In fact, it is at point 6 where the directions briefly deviate from the map and terrain, seemingly without reason. This raises doubts and prompts a brief search.

We have done this route twice since the clearer directions were provided. Apart from one small inaccuracy (but easily corrected by following the route), the trail is very pleasant and varied. Thank you very much.

Hello Fralain08
Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts on this route.
I will go over the description again to clarify the route to follow after the rocky descent.
I would like to clarify two points.
A national forest is marked on the map with a green line. On the ground, ditches often mark the boundaries.
As far as hunting is concerned, only battues (driven hunts) are indicated.
The route described is affected by four hunting areas, all of which are in the Regional Nature Park.
A link in Practical Information provides access to the calendar.
I just checked it, and Thilay Tournavaux was indeed hunting on Sunday!
You were right to cut your trip short...
Enjoy your walks.

We couldn't find the right path just after the rocky descent that goes around the Roc la Tour site. We found the path on the right but not the one immediately to the left, so we decided to follow the GR for much longer in order to find the wide forest path that leads back to the Route de la Lyre. We wasted a lot of time (we had taken the IGN map).
At point 3, we walked along the recent conifer plantation but didn't take the path on the left (shortly afterwards = unclear sign, and besides, how can you recognise a national forest?).
Furthermore, at the starting point, there was no hunting in the area (indications on the sign at the Roc la Tour car park), but around point 4, we heard the sounds of hunting in progress, which made us give up on continuing.
We shortened the route by turning back to the forest road (which extends the Woiries road on the right) which took us back to the starting car park. We will try again when the hunting season is over.
