From the Josep Maria Monfort Baiau refuge to the Les Fonts refuge

Second stage of the route around Étang de Soulcem. A beautiful high-mountain stage with no major difficulties, despite the Port de Baiau pass, which is impressive and very steep towards the end but poses no real danger if you remain cautious. This is followed by a descent into the valley before climbing back up to spend the night at the unmanned Les Fonts refuge, a typical Andorran refuge with iron beds, a fireplace and an outdoor water point. The view over the Andorran valley is splendid and restful after the exertions of the day.

This walk is part of a multi-day hike: Cross-border hiking in the Pyrenees

Description of the walk

(S) Leave the refuge and head down towards the lake.

(1) Pass a variant ofthe GR® 11, known asthe GR® 11-1, which branches off to the left towards the Collada dels Estanys Forcats. Follow the lake along its eastern side until the start of the ascent.

(2) The very steep path climbs up to Port de Baiau, passing through a sort of scree field on the final hairpin bends.

(3) Descend south-eastwards then south towards Estany Negre.

(4) Walk along the side of the lake on the left whilst continuing on theGR® 11, descending due south then due east to the Comapedrosa refuge.

(5) Here, join theGRP® La volta a Andorra and follow it from this point, in conjunction with theGR® 11.
Continue the descent due east, passing the Fenoll fountain further on.

(6) Continue to the left, crossing the stream. From here, the path runs along the hillside, descending slightly, initially heading north-west. Cross another stream, then head east to join a track.

(7) Take this track, which climbs gently; it heads south-east at first, then, after a few bends, turns sharply north-west to a hamlet called Borda de la Coruvilla (two houses).
Note: you can also take theGRP®, which branches off to the right from the track for a while before rejoining it.

(8) Continue along theGRP® combined withthe GR® 11. Climb north-west then north. As you approach the spillway of the small lake below the Pla de l'Estany refuge, you will come to a junction.

(9) Let theGR® 11-1 head due north and take the GRT on the right (south-east). Pass higher up via the small pass of Font Podrida, continue through the undergrowth south-east along the hillside, before climbing steeply due north to reach the Les Fonts refuge (E).

Notes

There is plenty of water throughout the route. Access to Port de Baiau is difficult and requires caution.

(1) At the junction, it is possible to follow theGR® 11 variant, namely theGR® 11-1, which heads towards the Collada del Estanys Forcats. Once over the pass, continue towards the lakes below, then due east to the 2400m ridge and then due south to the Pla de l’Estany refuge (2400m). A little further down (9), rejoin the GRT which leads to the Les Fonts refuge.
This shorter alternative has the advantage of losing less elevation; I didn’t choose it because a snowfield on the Estanys Forcats could have made the passage difficult.

(8) Borda de la Coruvilla: a path heads due east and climbs gently to the 2080m ridge, joining theGRP® to reach the Les Fonts refuge; this shortcut can be difficult to find, so theGRP® and then the GRT are safer options.

Bring an Andorran map, as it is more reliable.
