From Lake Orta to the Croix d'Egro viewpoint

After a well-earned climb, the Croix d'Egro offers a magnificent view of the entire lake. Most of the route is through forest, with passages through hamlets with azaleas, etc. The return trip to the viewpoint is relatively steep but well worth it!

Description of the walk

Departure from Pella, on the western shore of Lake Orta. From the south, from the centre of Pella, take Via Don Gaetan Zonotti along the lake. Cross Via Roma, continue and park in a paid car park at the corner of the next street.

(S/E) Take the street that heads west, away from the lake, where the car park is located. Ignore the church and turn left at the three-way junction a few metres before it.

(1) Ignore the stone bridge and continue to the right (red and white markings). Follow a fairly steep climb to the next fork.

(2) Ignore the path that branches off to the right (barred) and continue straight ahead. At the road, turn right and reach the start of a path on the left.

(3) Take this path and you will come to a hamlet street. Turn left and then quickly turn right opposite the garages. Follow the grassy lane to the tarmac road.

(4) Take the street on the left (Via Monte San Giulio), follow the markings for 800 metres and arrive at a three-way junction with a pretty calvary on the right-hand side in the village of Egro.

(5) Follow the street to the right and the white-red markings. Walk past the church on your left, then take the alleyway on the right, Via Crocciolo, just after. You will reach a fork in the road facing a wall.

(6) Turn right, taking a hairpin bend, onto the path towards Croce Di Egro and reach the foot of a telecommunications pylon.

(7) Follow the path down to the right and continue to the end, where there is a viewpoint.

(8) Admire the view of the lake and retrace your steps to the hairpin bend.

(6) Follow the path to the right into the forest. At the hamlet, continue along the tarmac road until you reach a multiple junction. Take thesecond road on the right and head towards the cemetery and the chapel of Egro.

(9) Pass between the two and continue along this pleasant path.

(10) Walk alongside Grassona Cemetery and continue to a hamlet and its church with a nearby picnic area (tables and games).

(11) At the corner of the church, turn right at a right angle, then continue straight ahead on Via Santa Lucia. Follow the signs, turn right at the road and take thefirst path on the right.

(12) Take this path and continue straight ahead to the church in the hamlet of Colma.

(13) Leave the signposts and turn right onto Via per Cerara, then continue along Via per Ronco. The road turns into a gravel path; descend to a large chapel.

(14) Go around it on the left and continue downhill, walking alongside it. Further on, ignore the paths that branch off to the left and continue to the road that runs alongside the lake. Follow it to the right with caution. This is not the most pleasant part of the walk, but enjoy the view of the lake.

(15) There are three benches where you can enjoy the tranquillity of the lake. Continue along the road, find more benches further on and reach the car park at Pella (S/E).

We only went to the viewpoint and back (point 8, 5km round trip)
Fantastic view of Lake Orta, but you have to work for it (quite a steep climb)
Please note that this route should only be attempted in dry weather. Access to the viewpoint (descent) is a little difficult and
the paths under the chestnut trees are beautiful but paved, so slippery in wet weather.
A lovely summer walk.

Great hike in the shade of the forest. Magnificent view of the lake near the cross. Return to the lake via a road with very little traffic.

Watch out for mosquitoes, make sure you bring insect repellent as there are lots of them.

Perfect picnic spot in the heart of a village (and no mosquitoes)

We opted for a very pleasant alternative. Staying in Pettenasco, we took the boat to Isola S. Giulio, where we were able to take a short tour of the island, which was sufficient, then from Isola S. Giulio to Pella. We hiked to Ronco and then took the boat back to Pettenasco.
If you plan your timetable carefully, it works out rather well. We had to wait a little while for the boat in Ronco, but we took the opportunity to have a quick swim in the lake (ladders available).
It is possible to buy a "day" ticket for both boat routes for a very reasonable price (€10.40).
Thank you for this very enjoyable hike!

A very beautiful hike, which I personally would have done in the opposite direction to avoid ending up with a 3km walk along a road (in the blazing sun, no less). We couldn't park at the church because there were no spaces, but if you drive a little further along the road, it's easy to find a parking space and it's free.
Otherwise, it's a very beautiful hike, not very busy, with a magical view at La Croix d'Egro and a very shady route, which is rather pleasant when the temperatures rise.

A very beautiful hike offering stunning views overlooking the lake.
The last few kilometres are on a paved road, but there is little traffic.
We didn't meet many people, but then again, it was May.
