From Le Freussin to the bread oven at Beurlay and Sainte-Radegonde

Set against a backdrop of woodland and rocky outcrops, the rural landscape of the communes of Beurlay and Sainte-Radegonde unfolds before you. Typical of the Romanesque heritage of the Saintonge region,12th- and13th-century churches and a bread oven add to the charm of the route.

Description of the walk

The entire route is marked with a yellow line.

Starting point: Church car park; GPS 45°51'35.4"N 0°50'08.8"W

(S/E) Leave the car park, turning left onto the D118, and head due south towards L’Épinard for 230 m, until you reach a fork in the road . The mill is visible on the right.

(1) Leave the D118 and then continue to the left towards La Bataille.

(2) After the house, take a grassy path on the right and head into the woodland. At the first junction, continue in the same direction along the path opposite. You’ll come out onto the departmental road.

(3) Just before the D125, take a forest track on the right. Cross the D118 and keep heading in the same direction towards Le Gros Buisson until you reach a junction.

(4) Turn onto the path on the left, turn right twice at the edge of the woodland and you’ll reach a road.

(5) Turn left to join the D125 at Sainte-Radegonde. Turn right onto it. The church is on your left. Turn right onto Rue Saint-Thomas to reach the town hall car park. You can start the walk here (GPS coordinates in ‘Practical Information’)

(6) Continue along the D215. Keep to the right until you reach the start of the Bois des Brandes.

(8) Turn left onto a forest track leading to La Haute Casse.

(8) Turn left into it. Keep to the left along the track. At the last house, the road gives way to a grassy track. Take another track on the left, heading due north, then turn right and reach the D215, crossing it carefully.

(9) Continue along a track on the edge of the woodland on the left. Pass some farm buildings and carry on along the track, with woodland and fields alternating on your right. Ignore the two successive junctions ahead to reach a Fork in the road.

(10) Turn right towards a row of trees marking the edge of the woods. Take the forest track on the right, heading due south. Discover the dolmen known as ‘la Grosse Pierre’.

(11) Turn left onto a forest track. At the Fork in the road, take the track on the right. At the small triangular clearing, turn right and reach the edge of the woods via a cross-country path.

(12) Turn left onto Rue du Stade. You’ll reach the football pitch. Turn right onto Rue du Stade. Continue along a wide pavement until you reach the pedestrian crossing. Carry on along the D137 until you reach Rue de la Pierrière.

(13) Turn left onto this street, then left onto Rue des Angibauds and right onto Rue de la Barrière. Pass a junction and, at the last house, turn left onto a path, then right onto a tree-lined road and walk past Le Cogné.

(14) After Le Cogné, head uphill to the left along a stony track. Walk alongside the Bois du Four à Chaux on your right and take a track to the right. At the fork, take the left-hand track lined with trees. Walk past the hamlet of Les Luées, then along a small road that curves to the right to reach a crossroads.

(15) Continue along a stony path and descend steeply into the Freussin marsh. Cross the stream of the same name and traverse the marsh to reach a Fork in the road.

(16) Turn right onto a small road between the wooded hillside and some gardens. Walk along, then, at a sharp left-hand bend, keep going in the same direction along a grassy path (wash house). Cross the D137 with care, then head downhill towards the church. Cross the Freussin via a footbridge to return to the starting point. (S/E)

Worth a visit

Notre-Dame Church (15th and13th centuries): dedicated to Saint Mary, it is thought to be of very ancient origin, as it is mentioned in a charter dating from 1047.

The Sainte-Radegonde oven: in 2008, a local resident donated a bread oven to the local council, which has been fully restored.

St Madeleine’s Church (12th century): threatened with ruin, it was fully restored. Thanks to the municipality’s determination, in 1996 the church regained its original appearance, or at least a degree of its original integrity.

The Grosse Pierre dolmen.

I only did part of the hike, the loop between points 1 and 13, which is 12 km following the trail on the app. It is marked in yellow all along the route.
Wide, attractive paths through the woods.
The village of Sainte Radegonde is of little interest and the section of road between points 6 and 7 is unpleasant.
It is possible to avoid this section (but this shortens the circuit considerably) without missing any remarkable scenery by turning right at point 6 to join the route described between points 9 and 10.
There are few points of interest on the circuit, but don't miss "the big stone" in the woods to the right of the path at point 11 (Neolithic construction?)
