From the Convent of St Dominic to Sant’Antonino and back

A short, easy walk, but with truly breathtaking views over the Balagne region, between Ile-Rousse and Calvi. The path offers unobstructed views throughout the entire route and is largely shaded in the morning. Some sections have steps, but the walk is generally easy. It really is a lovely walk.

Description of the walk

The easiest place to park is the car park at the Convent of Saint Dominic in Corbara; you can reach it from the D151 via a small road on the left as you approach from Corbara.

(S/E) At the end of the car park, turn right onto a dirt track that slopes down slightly, then take a path on the left (with steps) marked in yellow (San Antonino).

(1) After about fifty metres, carry on straight ahead. The path becomes quite easy to walk on and the view is very interesting.

(2) The path first follows the contour line, then climbs steadily until it passes just above a water collection point (a slight descent, then the climb resumes). The view over the Balagne is truly extraordinary. In the foreground, below, lies the village of Pigna.

(3) After joining a dirt track and a slight false flat, you’ll reach the lower part of the village of Sant’Antonino. Take the opportunity to explore the village (which is quite touristy) and, if you like, climb to the top for a 360° view. Retrace your steps along this route to return, heading down towards the Convent of Saint Dominic (S/E).

Notes

The village of Sant’Antonioni is very popular with tourists; all amenities are available there (in season)

The only ‘challenges’ on the route are a few sections with steps; so make sure you wear suitable footwear.

The convent car park is quite small, so be careful during the high season.

This walk forms part of the circular route that also passes through Pigna (marked and signposted in yellow).

Sant'Antonino is located in the heart of Balagne, perched at an altitude of 500 metres on a granite peak near L'Île-Rousse and Calvi, between the sea and the mountains. The village overlooks the Aregno plain on one side and part of the Reginu plain on the other. A veritable eagle's nest, it consists of around 75 houses, built close together and winding around a granite peak, forming a labyrinth to better resist any invaders (Source: Wikipedia).

Discover the Maison du Bandit: a project well worth the effort, offering a superb view over the village of Feliceto. An imposing building set against the rock face is sure to catch the visitor’s eye. Built in the 19th century by a local dignitary – most likely the mayor – it is said to have later served as a hideout for passing bandits.

This short hike is interesting for its various monuments: fountains, wash house, ruined castle, houses, church and even a beehive house. The path is shaded. The gentle slope makes for an easy heritage walk at the foot of the village of Speloncato, which is ideal for families.

At an altitude of 377 m above Lumio lies the ruined village of Occi. In the 15th century, it was inhabited by people who had deserted the coast to flee the Saracens. The 17th and 18th centuries saw the decline of the village. Occi was attached to Lumio in 1852. Felice Giudicelli, known as Fra Felice, the last inhabitant, died there on 22 November 1918. The 15th-century Baroque church of the Annunziata was rebuilt from its ruins (the work was partly financed by Laetitia Casta).
