Park in the Col du Tourmalet car park (altitude 2115 m), which is quite busy between 11am and 4pm in summer (view of La Mongie).
(S/E) Head back up and walk past the Maison du Tourmalet (accessible via steps), then take the gravel road opposite which climbs up the mountainside. You cannot miss the route as it is the old access road to the observatory, the Route du Pic du Midi. Go round the left of the Pic du Tourmalet (2,486 m), which is on your right. After a wide right-hand bend, you’ll reach a viewpoint overlooking the Pic du Tourmalet.
(1) Enjoy the view and continue along the path; after about 150 m, you’ll come to a cool tunnel.
(2) Pass through the tunnel; you are now halfway along the route. Further on, as you emerge from a right-hand bend, a striking view opens up of the Pic du Midi de Bigorre (2,876 m) and, to your left below, Lake Oncet.
(3) Continue towards the Col de Sancours until you reach a crossroads.
(4) Ignore the path leading down to the lake on the left and continue north for about 500 m to find the start of a small footpath. Option for a return trip to the Col de Sencours.
(5) Head down to the left via the small path and reach Lac d'Oncet.
(6) Take a short break by the lake, surrounded by the Col de Sencours and the Pic d'Oncet.
The return journey follows the same route back to the Maison du Col du Tourmalet (S/E).
