From Azay-le-Ferron Castle to Preuilly Forest

This hike starts at the Renaissance castle of Azay-le-Ferron and takes you into the heart of the Preuilly forest. It offers some unexpected points of interest: a monument dedicated to the Resistance, a pond nestled in the undergrowth and glimpses of the Haute-Touche animal park.

Description of the walk

The departure point is at the church square. Follow the green signs for circuit no. 21, called "Du parc à la forêt" (From the park to the forest), provided by the Brenne Regional Nature Park.

(S/E) Opposite the castle, turn right onto Rue Hersent Luzarche (D925). Leave Rue de la Poste on your right, then at the next crossroads, turn left onto Rue du 8 Mai. Follow the low wall of the castle grounds until you reach thesecond gate.

(1) Turn right into a cedar-lined driveway. At the end, take the track on the right to join the D925. Cross it carefully, follow it for 50 m on the right and turn left onto a farm track that winds through fields to return to the D925.

(2) Cross it carefully again and take a gravel track opposite, which becomes grassy after the last house. Then follow a farm track on the right, which leads to a small road. Cross it and continue along the track opposite.

(3) Carefully follow the D925 on your left for 100 m to reach the D14c. Do not follow it, but take the farm track opposite leading to the place called Le Rond. Then take the small road on the right to rejoin the D925. Cross it carefully, keeping to the right for 50 m, then take the small road on the left for 300 m.

(4) Turn left onto a wide grassy path that initially runs alongside the forest before entering it. It suddenly becomes a narrow path in the middle of abundant vegetation and crosses a stream as you approach the Étangs Gilet. After a passage over a ditch, you will come out onto a wide path, the GRP® Touraine Sud.

(5) Follow it to the right, skirting a clearing, until you reach a white gravel forest lane. Cross it and continue straight ahead. After 800 m, cross another white lane (Allée de la Rolle). After 800 m, you will reach the D14a. Turn left and follow it for 200 m.

(6) Take the wide grassy lane on the right that enters the forest (signposts for circuit no. 21 + Les itinéraires de la mémoire, sur la Résistance).

(7) After 600 m, leave the GRP® and follow a lane on the right to reach a memorial stone (IGN map incorrect). Follow the lane eastwards until you reach the D14.

(8) Cross it carefully and continue opposite until you reach a pond surrounded by undergrowth. Cross a concrete footbridge and climb up through the woods.

(9) Soon you will pass the Haute-Touche animal park. In the distance, you will see kangaroos and mouflons in their enclosures. Pass several paths on your right.

(10) Follow a section of track for 300 m. Then reach the edge of the forest and take an open farm track.

(11) Just before the hamlet of Fouillaumain, turn right down a tree-lined path that crosses a wood, then passes between two ponds (not visible) and climbs up to a crossroads.

(12) Follow the road on the right towards Vieillemare (signposted). Further on, it turns 90° to the left, then climbs up to the small road to Courtil.

(13) Follow it to the right, passing through the hamlets of Les Places and La Gratinerie.

(14) At the entrance to Azay-le-Ferron, take a carriageway on the right which, further on, turns 90° left to reach Rue de la Berlandière, which you follow to the left. Leave Rue de la Poste on your right and reach the church car park (S/E).
