Start from the Parc des Trois Croix on the D1082 road, situated below on the left towards Saint-Étienne.
(S/E) Head south along the road to Saint-Sauveur-en-Rue for 50 metres. Take the dirt track rising gently to the right into the forest. Follow this wide track almost in a straight line.
(1) You’ll cross – and ignore – a wide track coming from the left, which you’ll take on the return journey. Carry on until you reach the D28 road.
(2) Cross the road and carry on straight ahead towards the hamlet of Prélager. Pass through and leave the hamlet behind. At the first junction, ignore the path leading off to the right towards the visitor centre, and go straight on with the meadow on your right until you reach the forest.
(3) Follow the wide, flat path and, after 500 metres, ignore a path leading uphill to the left. Almost immediately, you’ll reach a large cleared area; walk through this for 350 metres, following the gently sloping path along the edge of the forest and then into the forest itself. After 300 metres, the path curves to the left; follow the curve for 50 metres.
(4) Let the path continue straight ahead before turning sharply uphill to the left. Cross an area of heather and juniper and reach the Pierre Saint-Martin. The very narrow path follows an area of meadow and broom. Head towards the huge Croix de Chaussitre and its orientation table.
(5) Retrace your steps and, after 50 metres, take the path on the right. The path curves to the right to reach a stony track near a pylon on the left.
(6) Follow the stony track downhill. The track turns into a road and passes a few houses in Le Teil. Continue along the road until you reach another road near some houses situated below on the right.
(7) Take the road to the left. 150 m further on, ignore the road coming from the right. 200 m further on, you’ll reach a road coming from the left from the hamlet of Du Creux; ignore this and carry straight on.
(8) Follow this road straight on until you reach the hamlet of Bourgaud.
(9) When the road bends sharply to the right (90°), instead follow the path leading uphill to the left, running alongside a goat farm. This path, running through the meadows, joins the D28 road.
(10) Follow the road downhill to the right. After 200 m, take a path uphill to the left. The path runs through woodland and then across meadows. Make sure you close the wooden gates properly. Opposite a house in the meadow, you’ll reach a road; follow it to the right for 200 m, ignoring a road branching off to the right towards some houses. You’ll come to a crossroads.
(11) At the junction, take the first path, which turns sharply to the left. Follow this well-marked, almost straight path, ignoring two turnings to the right. This path curves to the left before reaching a junction at the 1197-metre mark.
(12) Take the path straight ahead, ignoring the paths branching off to the right and left. After 700 m, you’ll reach a main track which you passed along at the start of the walk.
(1) Follow this path as it turns to the right. You’ll reach the D22 road; follow it to the left to return to the starting point at the Parc des Trois Croix (S/E).
