Start from the Onchets car park, at the junction between Route de la Villaz and Route de Bellecombe
(S/E) Go up the road until you see a sign on the left for "Les Mellies".
(1) Then take the forest path on the left that climbs up to a fork.
(2) At the intersection, continue straight ahead towards "Damoz des Prés" and you will arrive at the La Chaux cross and its panoramic view. There is a picnic table there.
(3) You will arrive at La Chaux, where the panoramic view awaits you. There is a picnic table available. Continue along a steep forest path. This is quite strenuous but not dangerous, so don't be discouraged. You will arrive at a flat area in the Bois de l'Arête.
(4) If you are tired and don't feel able to complete the climb, you can take the road towards the Col de l'Écuelle, which will make the loop easier. In this case, follow the map from point (7). Otherwise, from the Bois de l'Arête, take the small stony path that climbs behind the sign towards the Pointe de Cercle. The forest climb is difficult but the path widens as you go.
(5) Once you reach Pointe de Cercle, continue along the ridge, following the direction of Col de l'Écuelle towards Pointe de la Croix (marked by a cross to indicate the summit). Enjoy the most beautiful view of the route from here.
(6) Then continue towards the Col de l'Écuelle.
(7) At the pass, take the road that descends towards La Villaz. Do not take the road halfway down that takes you back to the Bois de l'Arête. The signpost "Col de l'Écuelle", a little off the road, points in the right direction.
(8) Once in La Villaz, continue downhill towards Saint-Jean-d'Aulps to reach Les Onchets.
(1) Continue straight ahead to the car park at the start (S/E).
