Delémont - Lucelle Petit Kohlberg

This first stage of the Chemin du Jura begins in Delémont, the capital of the Canton of Jura. You’ll walk through this pretty medieval town. Following a forest path, you’ll reach a plateau offering views of the Jura mountain range. Before descending towards Lake Lucelle, you’ll enjoy another panoramic view at La Grande Roche.
As the village of Lucelle in Switzerland no longer offers accommodation, you’ll make a short detour into Alsace, to the commune of Lucelle in France, where you’ll stay at the Auberge du Petit Kolhberg.

This walk is part of a multi-day hike: Jura Trail (Switzerland)

Description of the walk

To aid the description, the following symbols are used:
Sign R: Yellow sign with a hiker pictogram.
Sign No. 31: Yellow multi-directional sign with a green No. 31 sticker.
The start of this walk is near the SBB station in Delémont.

Signposting: Swiss ‘R’ sign or sign No. 31.

(S) From the Ibis hotel, head west, taking Rue de la Malière and then Rue de la Maltière. At the roundabout, turn right towards the north-west and follow the signs for Sign No. 31 until you reach the town limits.

(1) At the ‘Randonneur’ sign, leave the road and follow the path along the edge of the woodland. Follow the signs until you reach a sign No. 31 at the end of a field.

(2) Turn left, join a small road and follow it to a hairpin bend.

(3) At the ‘R’ sign, begin a climb through the woods, crossing a forest track at an altitude of around 800 metres. Continue westwards until you reach a small road.

(4) Follow the road westwards until you reach another ‘R’ sign.

(5) At this point, the sign indicates you should take a path that is difficult to walk on. Choose to stay on the road as far as the Haute Borne farm.

(6) Leave the farm on your right and head west as indicated by the sign. You’ll come to a small road at elevation 876. Follow it until you reach a junction at La Ventolière, which also has sign No. 31.

(7) Take the track heading west, with a telecommunications mast in your sights. Pass through the hamlet of Les Côtes (901 metres). Continue towards the mast until you reach a sign pointing to the mountain refuge.

(8) Continue to the Cerneux refuge, a lovely spot to take a break.

(9) Just behind the refuge, a ‘Randonneur’ sign points towards path No. 31. If the meadow has not been mown, the path is difficult to find in the tall grass. In this case, it is advisable to follow the track heading north-west until you reach a bend.

(10) Keep heading north-west, then head down towards the Plaimbois farm, where you’ll find a sign for Trail No. 31.

(11) Continue westwards until you reach a sign pointing to the Grande Roche.

(12) Begin the ascent towards the Grande Roche, crossing several cow paddocks. Make sure you close the gates properly and walk along the pastures at the edge of the woodland.

(13) Enjoy the view and take a break at the picnic table. Return to the ridge path heading north-east and begin the descent to a junction with a forest track.

(14) As indicated by sign No. 31, continue north-east along the track to quickly reach Lac de Lucelle.

(15) Follow the road towards the lake. Pass the old customs post and then the former abbey to reach another sign No. 31.

(16) Turn right onto the small road and follow it to the junction with the Chemin de l’Abbaye Saint Bernard.

(17) Take the path indicated by the ‘R’ sign and you’ll soon reach the junction of two paths.

French signposting: Yellow Triangle.

(18) Take the second path, which climbs quite steeply at the start. Stay at the edge of the woods, then gradually descend towards a forest track.

(19) Turn right until you reach the junction of two tracks.

(20) Take the track on the left, which curves in a semicircle. You’ll reach another junction.

(21) Ignore the path on the right leading towards a field. Turn left, then immediately right, to come out onto the Route du Petit Kohlberg.

(22) Turn right towards the Auberge du Petit Kohlberg, your accommodation for the night (E).
