Discover the Haute-Somme mini-train

An easy, short walk, ideal for families: first, at a higher elevation to admire the Somme and its marshes; then along the canalised Somme with its locks; and finally, at the end of the walk, the chance to experience the Haute-Somme tourist train during the season.

Description of the walk

The walk starts at the car park for the ‘P’tit train de la Haute-Somme’. This is set back from the D329 road linking Bray-sur-Somme to Proyart, near the hamlet of Froissy. Coming from Bray-sur-Somme, take a path on the left just after the silos on the right-hand side of the road. A tourist sign for the train indicates the direction to take. Park in one of the car parks in front of the train’s departure buildings. The walk can be done in either direction; it is described here as an anti-clockwise route.

(S/E) Start by taking the track you used by car to reach the car park.

(1) Just before you reach the D329, take the hairpin bend to the left onto the path that climbs up towards the fields. Continue straight on, ignoring the paths branching off to the right. After skirting the fields, the path winds its way through the trees below the fields. Carry on straight ahead until the path branches off to the right – with no option to continue straight on – and joins a road.

(2) Turn left onto this road, heading downhill, and cross the railway line. Do not enter the tunnel on the left! Continue straight on along Rue des Vergeaux.

(3) At Rue de l’Écluse on the left, you can take a shortcut (see Practical Information). Otherwise, continue along Rue des Vergeaux until you reach the small park on the left

(4) Go round the park or walk through it to take the path just beyond the war memorial, behind the signposts for the D1 road. This grassy path takes you close to the Canalisée section of the River Somme.

(5) Turn left to walk along the left bank of the canal. Continue straight on between the railway line and the canal.

(6) After the locomotive shed, turn left onto the road leading back up towards the car park (S/E).

Notes

(3) You’ll reach the path running alongside the canal at the lock. This shortcut saves you about 10 to 15 minutes.

Worth a visit

(5) In Cappy, a bascule bridge carries the road over the canal.
As you walk along the Somme Canal, you’ll have the chance to see a lock. With a bit of luck, you’ll see it in operation as a boat passes through.
At the start/finish point, during the season you can board a small tourist train for a return journey lasting around 1 hour 15 minutes, followed by a visit to the museum. See the association’s website for more information: https://www.petittrainhautesomme.fr/.

A lovely walk along the canal.
As it was very hot on the day of our outing, we decided to walk there and back along the shaded banks of the canal rather than doing the circular route.
