Description of the walk

Park in the car park on the small square below Chipilly church or to the left of the church on Place de la Mairie.

The walk is signposted in red and white as far as the lock junction.

(S/E) Take Rue du Marais, to the right of the church, for about a hundred metres, then turn left into Rue du Pont Rouge. Turn right immediately; this road gradually becomes a country lane.
Pass between two campsites (mobile homes) and continue along the path through open countryside until you reach a crossroads.

(1) Turn left onto the ascending track until you reach Route d’Etinehem. Follow it to the right for a few metres to reach the Belvédère du Camp de César. Take a moment to enjoy the view: you can make out part of the route near the lock.

(2) Return to the road and head down to the right towards the marshes. Caution! Traffic is fairly light but the road is not very wide.
At the bottom of the descent, take the road on the right leading to the marshes, 200 m further on, and cross a small, narrow bridge.

(3) Then turn right in the middle of a car park for anglers. Cross the car park and follow the narrow dirt track straight ahead between the ponds. Cross a small bridge by making an S-bend.
At the end of the path, turn left to join the road (leaving a private bridge on your right). Cross the canal via the road bridge that goes over the lock.

(4) Leave theGR® here and turn right immediately after the bridge. The path then runs alongside the canal. You will reach the Étang de la Hutte.

(5) Continue along the edge of the canal and the ponds to reach the Pont Rouge.

(6) Now head north-west to reach the bridge between Cerisy and Chipilly.

(7) Turn right onto it and you will find theGR® markings here. Follow them to reach the Chipilly car park (S/E).

Worth a visit

(2) The Camp de César viewpoint: after the climb across the fields, a beautiful view of the Somme Canal and the ponds.
Between (4) and (7), this section of the walk follows the Somme Canal and its ponds: numerous ducks, geese and swans; hunters in hides can also be seen during the hunting season.

What a lovely view from Camp Cesar! I’ll start the hike in reverse so I can enjoy the view at the end and take my time admiring this beautiful panorama.

A lovely walk. A viewpoint, marshes, a lock and a towpath with no bikes.
