A walk around Le Vigan

Le Vigan is not a particularly pretty or touristy town. However, if you stop off there, here's a walk to discover a few aspects of the historic centre and the banks of the river Arre.

Description of the walk

When you arrive in Le Vigan via the D999, park in the Super U car park.

(S/E) Return to the D999, cross it and take the street opposite (Rue du Palais) signposted "Centre ville", on the left of a beautiful old building. At the end of the street, turn left onto Place du Quai (note the beautiful fountain with lion heads). Cross the square to reach the church.

(1) Turn left, pass another fountain with lions, unfortunately badly damaged, and follow Rue Pierre Gorlier. Do not go as far as the bridge on the D999 but turn left onto Rue d'Anvers, a narrow alley between high walls. You will come to a street. Walk a few metres to the left to see the façade of the Château d'Assas. Retrace your steps and continue straight ahead (Rue des Barris), pass behind the church and continue straight ahead (Rue Haute then Rue des Casernes until you reach the T-junction with Boulevard du Plan d'Auvergne. Turn right to arrive in front of the town hall.

(2) Continue straight ahead for about 50 metres, then turn right at the crossroads onto a street called La Calade. Then turn right onto Rue de la Boucherie, then take the first street on the left (Rue du Marché) and you will arrive at a small square where the tourist office is located. Continue straight ahead towards the fountain, then follow the street on the right (Rue du Four). At the end of the street, turn left (Rue de l'Église) and follow this street until you reach Place du Quai, in front of the church.

(1) As before, go straight on Rue Pierre Gorlier but this time cross the bridge over the D999. Immediately turn left, then take the first street on the right, Rue du Pont, signposted towards the "Vieux pont" (Old Bridge).

(3) Cross this Vieux Pont at the Musée Cévenol. On the other side of the Arre, find the Vieux Pont signpost and take the stairs on the left to follow a path along the river (note the orchards on the right).

(4) Pass under the Pont Neuf and continue along the river for a round trip to a dam.

(5) Retrace your steps back to the Pont Neuf.

(4) Take the stairs on the left to go up to the road, cross the bridge on the right and you will arrive at the supermarket car park (S/E).
