Camias and La Rouvierette loop from Les Quatre Chemins

These paths lead to terraces that were once cultivated and offer views of the surrounding hamlets. Most of this hike is in the shade of holm oaks and chestnut trees. You'll feel like you've stepped back in time in these typical Cévennes landscapes.

Description of the walk

Park at the crossroads known as Les Quatre Chemins, with the D170 and D354 (there is a picnic table).

(S/E) Head south-west, follow the D354 towards Camias and descend.

(1) After about 600 m, leave the road and take a path on the left. Join the road again at a hairpin bend and follow it downhill. After about 200 m, leave the road again and take a path on the left. This will take you to the intersection of two roads.

(2) Cross the D354 and take the small road that descends towards the hamlet of Camias.

(3) Cross the small bridge, then keep right as you climb up through the hamlet.

(4) Take the hairpin bend to the left and continue up through the hamlet, following the road and the yellow markings. After the last house in Camias, the road becomes a track. Climb up through a forest of holm oaks and chestnut trees, heading west, then south after crossing a valley.

(5) At a crossroads, leave the yellow-marked trail and take thesecond path on the right (a carriageway) which climbs gently uphill.

(6) A few metres before a "Pié Camp" sign, turn right onto a path towards Mandagout (the path opposite the post). Climb, turn right at the hairpin bend, continue climbing and arrive at a T-junction.

(7) Find a marked path and follow it uphill to the left. Cross the D170 and continue on the path that climbs opposite (beautiful views of Costubague and Mandagout). This will take you to a place called Rouasset (private property) where you will find the tarmac road again.

(8) Take the path immediately to the left of the tarmac road and continue north on a path bordered by a dry stone wall on your right. Cross a small stream and go uphill, leaving a building on your left (Les Pausettes). Turn right and head for the entrance to the hamlet of Rouas with its signpost.

(9) Leave the road and take a path on the right towards La Pierre Plantée. Leave the hamlet below on your left and follow this well-marked path north.

(10) At an intersection, leave the signposted path that climbs steeply to the right and continue straight ahead towards Peyrefiche. Climb with a general north-westerly bearing.

(11) At the next intersection, turn right at an acute angle (southeast) and follow a track that climbs steadily (red and white GR®60 markings).

(12) At the "Serre de Rouas" sign, follow the direction of Pont d'Hérault (still with the GR®). Ignore a path coming from the left (elevation 654) and immediately reach the "Les Suels" sign.

(13) Leave the GR® and continue right towards La Rouvierette on the drovers' road still used today for transhumance of sheep to the pastures of the Aigoual.

(14) Cross the hamlet, staying on the road.

(15) Leave it and take a path that descends to the right. Return to the road below and follow it downhill to the starting point (S/E).

Very pleasant hike with few people (we didn't see anyone today!)
The route is fairly well shaded.
However, a few comments on the description, confirmed by my GPS:

At marker 6: follow Mandagout (the path opposite the signpost) and not "Rouas".
At markers 6 and 7: when you reach the T-junction, there are two paths leading off to the right. Take the one that goes up, not the one that goes down.
At markers 7 and 8, I didn't see a hamlet called Rouasset, but two private properties. The owner of one of them kindly told me that the path was just to the left of the tarmac road. It runs alongside the fields with a low wall on the right.
When you reach the hamlet of Rouas, turn right just at the entrance to the hamlet at the "Rouas" sign and you will immediately see the dry stone wall that you need to follow.
At marker 10: Follow Peyrefiche.
At landmark 12: At the "Serre de Rouas" signpost, do not turn left, but continue straight ahead in the direction you are coming from.
