From Zakopane to the Schronisko mountain refuge

This first stage allows you to gradually leave the Zakopane area behind and enter the wooded areas of the Tatra National Park. A relatively balanced day’s walk before the much more demanding mountain stage the following day.

This walk is part of a multi-day hike: Crossing the High Tatras from Zakopane to Starý Smokovec

Description of the walk

There is a car park right next to the start of the hike, in the hills above Zakopane. N.B. Car parks in Poland are pay-and-display, even if they have limited spaces; make sure you have small change. It is also possible to park in Zakopane itself. This then involves a good hour’s walk along the road.

(S) From the car park on the hills above Zakopane, follow the main path south-eastwards as it gradually leads into the forest.
Continue along this route for several kilometres, following the track until you reach the entrance to the Tatra National Park.

(1) Pass the gatehouse at the park entrance. There is an entry fee. Then continue along the route which descends towards the valley. Carry on until you reach the Schronisko mountain hut (E).
