From Veules-les-Roses to Saint-Aubin-sur-Mer via the GR®21

Second part of the stage on the afternoon ofthe fifth day. Apart from the steps at Sotteville and Saint-Aubin-sur-Mer, there’s nothing particularly exciting about a coastalGR® route that’s so far from the coast.

This walk is part of a multi-day hike: Du Havre au Tréport par le GR®21

Description of the walk

(S) Start from the seafront esplanade. At the corner of Place Melingué and the street of the same name, go up a flight of steps on the left which joins Rue Meurice a little further up.

(1) Turn right onto it, then at the Fork in the road keep left onto Rue Vacquerie, then straight on into Rue Truffier. The street takes the form of a path through the woods, running alongside the Veules.

(2) Cross Rue du Docteur Girard with care, then continue straight ahead along the small street that curves to the left. Cross the RD925 with care and continue straight ahead along Cavée d’Iclon. At the next junction, turn left onto Chemin du Val. At the next right-hand bend, turn left into a short street leading onto the RD625. Cross the RD925 a second time with care. Head straight ahead up the path between two houses, which climbs through the woodland up to the plateau, then emerges into open ground.

(3) Turn right onto a farm track. At the T-junction at the end of the track, turn left onto another track which starts off in a gully and runs straight ahead through the fields.

(4) Turn right onto Rue Maréchal, then left onto Chemin des Forrières. Cross the RD68 with care and continue straight ahead. At the junction with Route des Veules 100 m further on, take the path opposite which skirts Sotteville-sur-Mer to the west and leads out near the sewage treatment works.

(5) Turn right onto a road and head for the Pointue car park, where there is a flight of stairs with around 250 steps leading down to the beach.

.(6) Make at least the short detour to the top of the steps. Head east for 50 m and turn right onto Chemin des Soupirs, which completes the loop around Sotteville-sur-Mer.

(7) Return to the RD68, cross it carefully (no pedestrian crossing), and walk alongside it to the left for 50 m. Turn right onto Rue de la Cordonnerie, then immediately left onto Rue de l’Argant. 200 m further on, turn diagonally left onto Rue des Anciens Réservoirs.

(8) Just before the path narrows, turn left onto a farm track until you reach the RD68. Carefully walk along the right-hand side of the road on the fairly wide verge for 250 m.

(9) Carefully cross the road at the pedestrian crossing and turn onto Chemin de la Vallée de Saussemare.

(10) Where the path joins the road at the car park, turn right onto Route de Saussemare. At the highest point of the road, turn left onto the footpath which leads to Rue de la Mer near the seafront (E).

Notes

Red and white GR® markings.

Grocer’s and accommodation available in Sotteville-sur-Mer.

(E) Out of season, there’s only one place to eat in Saint-Aubin-sur-Mer.

This section ofthe GR® isn’t exactly thrilling:

  • To make the route more enjoyable, depending on the tide, head along the sandy beach from (10) to reach the seafront (E).
  • And if anyone familiar with the area can confirm this, I get the impression you can go straight from (6) to (10) via farm tracks, unless a section is too close to the cliff edge or field fences block the way. On the satellite view, it looks doable. It would be nicer and safer than crossing the road and walking along the side of the county road.

Worth a visit

(S) Veules-les-Roses and its narrow streets.

(10) Saussemare’s sandy beach (a rarity in the region).

We checked whether it was possible to go straight on from point 6 to point 10:
It’s perfectly possible; you just need to walk straight across the fields (we didn’t take the path to the left towards the sea), keeping an eye out for cracks in the ground (caused by runoff), even if it means walking a little way across the crops… Follow the fences.
When you reach the wall of the Epineville lodge, turn right and walk along the wall, then carry on straight across the field until you reach the Saussemare road. Continue left along this road for 600 metres, heading down the hill to point 10, where the GR21 joins the road.
