From Sainte-Engrâce to the Col de Lépoa

First day of a 6-day trip in the Basque Country. On this first day, visit the Ehujarré Gorges. A climb through the woods, then discovery of the wide grassy slopes of Utzigagna, the land of sheep and shepherds. After a visit to Urugo to admire the gorges from above, we climb back up in the morning to reach the Col de d'Errayzéko Lépoua, border marker 256.
There, a vehicle will be waiting to take us to the Refuge Jeandel, saving us an 8 km drive along the border road.

This walk is part of a multi-day hike: traversée du pays basque partie Est

Description of the walk

Departure point: Sainte-Engrâce church car park.

(S) Take the road east for 50 metres, then turn right onto the road that heads south and descends towards the bottom of the valley.

(1) After crossing a small bridge, turn right onto the path that now heads south-west. A kilometre further on, you will enter the forest that fills the bottom of the Ehujarré Gorge.

(2) Cross the path and go up the gorge, staying on the well-marked trail.

(3) At the Molerse cave, you will leave the forest at an altitude of around 1,250-1,270 metres. After approaching the western cliff of the gorge, the path continues south, taking you along the left bank of the stream... After a small waterfall, you will come to a break in the slope, where the trail changes direction and heads east. Later, you will find yourself on a wide pass with the Cayolar d'Errayzé a few dozen metres below you to the east.
Stay on the pass and head south without joining the track.

(4) Head right, heading due west to reach the stream, then climb north-west towards the small Col Sargatéko Lépoua.

(5) All that remains is to head right, due north, to reach the Crête de l'Urugo (1,624 m) in a few minutes. From there, there is a beautiful view of Sainte-Engrâce, the Ehujarré Gorges and the Errayzé valley.

(6) Take the same path to return to the junction you passed on the way up.

(4) Turn right onto the track that climbs gently towards the Col de Lépoua and boundary marker 256 (E).

overestimated time! It took us two hours without running to reach the Lepoa Pass (without doing the AR 345 - Crête de l'Urugo)
