Description of the walk

Park near the cemetery and the church of Sainte-Engrâce.

(S/E) Take the path next to the Auberge Élichalt lodge opposite the cemetery. The path climbs steeply up to the road. At the junction with the D113, cross over and then turn right (signposted) onto a tarmac road and pass through a farm. The path surface is now dirt. When you reach the Elixagaraia farm, carry straight on, leaving the return path on your right.

(1) At the junction after passing through a gate (make sure to close it behind you), follow the grassy farm track slightly to the left: double yellow line with a directional arrow on a blue background. Leave the main track on your right. Then keep on this track, which climbs higher to the right and reaches a fork.

(2) Leave the farm track on your left and head straight up; the path is barely visible and unmarked at the junction.

(3) Look for the signposting (not very clearly marked) and follow the path which heads off to the right through roots and rocks. Continue to the highest point of the hike at Mürüxe and enjoy the view. Then continue on a virtually level path.

(4) Head down the slope to the right (no path and signs are hard to spot). Be careful, it’s very steep. At the bottom of the slope, take a path to the right that isn’t always well signposted at the start.

(5) At the junction, keep left before the gate onto a barely visible path. Then cross a magnificent section along a ledge, go through a gate and return to Elixagaraia Farm. Turn left and follow the path back along the same route to the starting point (S/E).

Notes

Routes pass through private farmland. Please ensure you close the gates behind you.

Wear good walking shoes (there are some fairly steep gradients and some muddy sections).

Pay attention to the signposting (double yellow line with a directional arrow on a blue background) – it is not always easy to follow, but the IGN map is fairly up to date.

Worth a visit

A scenic hike amidst herds of cows and horses (in season) with magnificent views.

The view from Müruxe (Murrutchegagne) is breathtaking.

In the village, there is a beautiful 12th-century church, and a visit to the Grotte de la Verna (the third-largest underground chamber in the world) and the Ehujarre Gorges is not to be missed.

The Élichalt inn is the perfect stopover lodge.

Hello.
I won’t be using the map for this hike as it’s far too imprecise. It’s a shame we can’t link it to a GPS app.

A lovely, short but challenging hike. A beautiful view from the top. The path back down is a bit steep for young children.

A very lovely walk, fairly well signposted except between points 2 and 3. It starts with a steep climb right from the off, but we managed it with three children (aged 12, 9 and 6) without any trouble. We missed the section via point 3 on the Visio Rando app but then found the trail again using the signposts without any problems. The descent is quite steep towards the end. Beautiful mountain scenery, woodland and riverside views.

A great hike, best done in clear weather. A few steep sections on both the ascent and descent meant I was working up quite a sweat by the time I reached the finish, despite the short duration of the walk. There’s a section through the forest where it’s not always easy to find the path. Otherwise, you just need to follow the signs.
