From Saint-Rémy-lès-Chevreuse to Coignières in the Upper Chevreuse Valley

Thirty-third and penultimate stage of the Grand Tour of Île-de-France via the GR®11, almost entirely in the Yvelines department.
It starts in Saint-Rémy-lès-Chevreuse and reaches Coignières after climbing up the Yvette valley and crossing the Haute Vallée de Chevreuse Regional Nature Park with its rich natural and architectural heritage, just a stone's throw from Paris and its inner suburbs.

This walk is part of a multi-day hike: Grand tour of Île-de-France in 34 stages on the GR®11

Description of the walk

Access: Saint-Rémy-lès-Chevreusestation , terminus of RER line B.

Red and white markings

(S) From the station, take the Greenway, which runs alongside the current railway tracks (on what was actually the right-of-way of their former extension towards Limours). Follow its wide curve to the left and the gentle slope for 2,500 metres until you cross a road.

(1) Continue straight ahead, still on the Greenway, and rejoin the GR®11. Follow it for another 1 km.

(2) As it runs along an embankment, leave the Greenway and take a small path on the right that descends the embankment until it joins a perpendicular path. Take this path to the right and climb back up to the plateau until you cross a road at the entrance to Boullay-les-Troux.

(3) Cross the road and take the path opposite. After 100 metres, turn left and continue until you reach some radio equipment. Turn right just before it, following the fence, then take the perpendicular path on the right after about 1 kilometre. You will reach a road at the entrance to Herbouvilliers.

(4) Cross it and continue straight ahead into the residential area. Continue along the path that extends the street and enters the Méridon Forest. Take the first path on the right, which continues straight ahead to the edge on the other side. First turn left then right to follow the edge and reach a car park.

(5) Continue along the edge and then turn left to enter the forest. Pass in front of the Château de Méridon. Continue along the small straight road, crossing another road.

(6) Continue straight ahead into the woods, still in a straight line (at the junction with another wide path, musical sculptures in the woods). Begin the descent into the valley and continue along the edge of the forest to reach Chevreuse.

(7) Turn right before the first houses and join the Route des Regains.

(8) Cross the road and continue straight ahead to cross the sports park (swimming pool on your right, rugby pitches on your left) and reach a branch of the Yvette river.

(9) Turn left onto a path, then take the bridge immediately on the right until you reach a path along another branch of the river. Follow this path to the left along the very pretty promenade with its small bridges. Continue until you reach a wash house.

(10) Take the bridge on the right just before the wash house and join Rue de la Division Leclerc. Follow it to the right, then cross to the left onto the pedestrian street Rue Joseph Jérôme Lalande. Then turn left towards the church square.

(11) Go around the church on your right, following the small path that runs alongside it, and turn left to reach Rue de Versailles. Follow it to the right until you reach Place des Halles.

(12) Turn left into the narrow street that leads to some steps, and begin the climb to the Château de la Madeleine. Follow the steps to the left, then turn right onto the path that climbs up to the château, passing under its imposing walls. When you reach the château entrance, take a moment to enjoy the view.

(13) Just after the parapet, turn left onto the small path that descends. Follow it, keeping to the right at each junction, until you reach Rue de Versailles.

(14) Turn right, then left onto Rue Pierre Chesneau.

(15) At the end of the left-hand bend, turn right onto Rue Jean Mermoz. Then turn right at the T-junction with Rue du 8 Mai 1945.

(16) After about 150 metres, take a narrow path on the left that winds between two walls (be careful, it can be difficult to find). Follow it to the end.

(17) Turn right onto Rue aux Bœufs, a small road that goes uphill. Pass through the hamlet of Jagny and you will reach Grande-Maison after about 2 km across the wooded plateau.

(18) Take the path on the left and you will come to the D91.

(19) Cross the road carefully and take the path opposite, about twenty metres to the left. Then turn onto the path on the right to stay on the plateau and reach La Motte after another kilometre in almost a straight line.

(20) Take the road on the left at an acute angle, then follow the path on the right which goes around a property on the right-hand side. Then continue left along the path which descends, leading to a track which follows the valley below, at Les Roches.

(21) Turn right onto this path at an acute angle and follow it to a T-junction in front of La Butte Ronde.

(22) First turn left then right to continue in the direction of the valley. Pass in front of the Source aux Fées wash house, then through landscapes of Fontainebleau-type sandstone blocks and reach the more imposing Maincourt wash house. Cross the river on the bridge.

(23) Continue to the road, then first turn right then left to continue along the path beside the river. After 750 m, you will reach a junction with paths leading up to the right.

(24) Turn right onto a steep path that climbs up to the plateau. At the top, turn left to continue in the same northward direction and join a wider path just before the Carrefour des Six Croix.

(25) Turn left to descend and pass in front of the cemetery and the Church of Saint-Nom. Continue downhill to a road.

(26) Take the road on the right for 150 m, then the one on the left, passing the small Pommeret stream. You will reach the hamlet of La Recette.

(27) Turn right onto the road and continue for 1 km until you reach the hamlet of Pommeret.

(28) First turn right then left to continue straight ahead on the path. Follow the path that climbs gently up the valley, and after 2 km you will reach a road just before the Val Favry pond. The contrast here is quite striking between the Regional Nature Park you have just left and the business park that lies ahead!

(29) Cross the road and the adjoining picnic area, and join another road behind. Pass the Rigole du Lit de Rivière, follow it to the left, then turn right between two industrial buildings. Cross a road and continue straight ahead to reach Coignières station (E).

Return: Coignièresstation on the Transilien N line.

Notes

(S) Saint-Rémy-lès-Chevreuse station, terminus of RER line B. Four trains per hour from Paris.

(E) Coignières station on the Transilien N line (Montparnasse network). Two trains per hour in each direction in general.

See theÎle-de-France Mobilités website for timetables.

This stage has many ascents and descents between the valley and the plateau. It is possible to shorten the stage if necessary, but, as is often the case, this means missing out on some points of interest:

  • It is possible to reach Chevreuse directly at point (8) or (9) from the start in Saint-Rémy by taking the pedestrian/cycle path that follows the valley along the Chemin de Coubertin, a road that branches off to the right of the Voie Verte mentioned in the description and runs alongside it for the first few hundred metres.
  • In Chevreuse, you can easily avoid the climb to Château de la Madeleine by going directly from (11) to (14).
  • Similarly, you can avoid the climb to Six Croix in Lévis-Saint-Nom by continuing straight on after (24), then following the road (which can be quite busy) on the right to (26).

Hike completed on 29 December 2025 with the aim of covering the entire GR® 11.
