From Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines to Versailles

The Bièvre Valley is undoubtedly one of the best places for hiking in the region. Indeed, in summer it is a succession of ponds and lush green landscapes. This hike takes you through the most interesting part of the valley, featuring a succession of five remarkable ponds. You can then round off your day with a visit to Versailles, adding a touch of history to the route.

Description of the walk

Departure from Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines station (terminus of one of the sections of RER Line C).

(S) On leaving the station (Place Étienne-François Choiseul), head straight on and pass the town hall annex. Then cross Avenue du Centre, continuing straight on.

(1) You will then come to a Y-junction: turn right onto theGR®11, which heads south-west between two rows of buildings. Keep going straight ahead and ignore the small paths leading towards the buildings. The path leads to hedges forming a square area with small corridors creating a maze. Go round the square on the left and pass two corners: at the second one, turn left onto the GR®. Then ignore a faint path coming from the right.

(2) At the end of the path, turn right then immediately left onto the first track and right onto the next. Stay on the same path until you reach the first pond. Walk along the right-hand side of the pond and continue straight on at every junction.

(3) Go through the tunnel under the D127. Then turn right at the first junction. You’ll come out onto a road; cross it carefully and follow it to the left. At the junction that comes up shortly afterwards, turn right and then immediately right again onto the GR®.

(4) You will reach the Chemin des Chevreuils; follow it to the right to cross the Bièvre (leaving theGR®). Take thefirst path on the left. Atthe first junction, head left onto a footpath. Then ignore the paths branching off to the left.

(5) At the crossroads, take the second path on the left which descends gently to the Étang du Moulin au Renard. At the bottom, follow a track to the right and walk along the pond on your left. You will come to a car park.

(6) Turn right and rejoin theGR® (red and white markings). At the junction that comes up shortly, take the first left. Keep left at the next two junctions. Cross a road, then turn right to walk alongside the Étang du Val d’Or on your left. Walk past a car park on the right at the end of the lake.

(7) Turn right, then take a first turn right then left to go through the tunnel under the D91. The path descends, skirting a sewage treatment plant on the left. You’ll come to a junction with a track.

(8) Follow the track to the left (due east). At a junction, go straight on and walk alongside the Étang de la Geneste on your right.

(9) At the end of the lake, turn left onto the Chemin des Marais. Cross a stream and immediately turn left to start a climb. At a fork, keep right and continue climbing with the GR®. At the top of the hill, at a junction, continue straight ahead. At the next junction, turn right before reaching another fork.

(10) Take thesecond left (north-east), still following theGR®. Then take thefirst path on the left, which is very inconspicuous. You’ll come to a track; follow it to the right (Route de Sebaque). Go straight on and ignore the paths branching off to the left. At the T-junction, turn right. At the end, turn left to cross a road and continue on the other side along a path that starts behind a barrier and runs alongside a fence.

(11) Pass under the N12 and, as you emerge from the tunnel, head left onto theGR®. Continue straight ahead (north) and take thesecond path on the left, at the foot of a water tower. Ignore a path on the right, then go down a flight of steps on the right. You’ll come to a lane; follow it to the left.

(12) You’ll come out onto the D938; follow it to the right and cross the railway line. Continue straight ahead on this road (Rue Édouard Charon). Take thefirst right, Rue Alexis de Tocqueville. You’ll reach the coach station; turn left to reach Versailles-Chantiers station (E).

A lovely walk along the Bievre, mostly in the shade. An easy route to follow, with no difficulties.

A very pleasant walk, with no difficulty at all. Just a stone’s throw from the town, you feel as though you’ve stepped into a completely different world. The ponds are a haven of tranquillity, without a single boat in sight; birds are everywhere (ducks, geese, coots, moorhens, herons, etc.).

I’ve done this route several times, in different seasons and weather conditions, both ways, alone or with others. It’s always just as enjoyable.

In terms of scenery and elevation, I’d suggest taking the Versailles-St. Quentin route.

I also suggest sticking to the north bank of the ponds where possible, as the view is often clearer; except in summer, when the south bank is more shaded. So, when heading from St-Q to V, stay on the GR at point (4); in the opposite direction, stay on the north bank at point (7).

The ponds are very busy on the St-Quentin side, less so on the Versailles side.

a hike between rain and sunshine. Followed the route using the app as the description is not always very clear. Mainly forest paths; some parts of the route are quite noisy, particularly with the N12 passing nearby. The section from station to station is nice

A very beautiful hike, quite busy around the lakes on this sunny October Sunday. We did the hike using the paper description. At point 5, it must be the first path on the left (not the second one we took, which probably caused us to miss part of the route along the Etang du Moulin au Renard). From point 6 onwards, I must have been distracted because I also missed the path along the Etang du Val d'Or... After that, I had no more problems!
Thank you.

A rather uneventful walk. Doing it in December on a rainy day didn’t exactly help me appreciate its beauty...

Just one comment so far. Surprising. A very pleasant walk on this lovely August Sunday. Mostly in the shade, so ideal on a hot day. Lovely spots for a picnic. Lots of trees, but also plenty of wildlife. We saw a deer, herons, swans, a kingfisher, and so on and so forth… Highly recommended, then.

A pleasant short walk, mostly in the shade, taking in several quiet ponds. I followed the GPX route.
