(S/E) The walk starts from the car park behind the church in Saint Georges d'Oléron. You can visit the interior of the church and see the polychrome Virgin Mary and learn about the legend associated with her. Walk along the church, which will take you past the market halls of Saint Georges, this former merchant village, walk along the small park and turn right at the newsagent's. This narrow alley widens and takes you to the cemetery. Walk along it and take the small path on the left and go up the cycle path, taking it on the right.
(1) This cycle path will take you through the marshes along the canal to an intersection. Cross the road to find another cycle path that runs alongside this road. At the end of this path, take the road on the left towards La Brée les Bains. At the small roundabout, continue straight ahead and at the next intersection turn right, cross this village through the small streets and arrive at the seaside. Turn left and as soon as possible take the left-hand dyke, watching out for pedestrians.
(2) Continue along the dyke until you reach the village of Saint Denis d'Oléron. At this point, take the road and turn right at the first intersection. Watch out for right-angle turns that block your view. At the intersection with a terrace, continue straight ahead, and at the next intersection, turn right to reach the street that runs alongside the municipal campsite.
(3) Pass under the archway at the end of the street and take the small, fairly steep but short hill on your left. A return trip on your right at the top of this small hill will allow you to enjoy the view of the Pertuis d'Antioche.
(4) Follow the path and, as soon as possible, take the path on your right which will lead you to the seafront, which you will follow fairly closely. After going down a small dyke and then back up, you will arrive at a small car park. Take the road on your right and immediately after, turn left to arrive at La Morelière.
(5) In this small hamlet, turn right, then left and right again to find yourself on a wide path through the fields. You are now within sight of the Chassiron lighthouse. Turn into the car park and walk to the lighthouse.
(6) Walk around the lighthouse on the right-hand side closest to the sea and take the small path close to the cliff. Take care with young children. Follow the coast until you reach a small car park.
(7) Cross the road to take the cycle path on the other side. Follow it to La Michelière, then continue until you cross the road that connects the bridge to the Chassiron lighthouse, after following it for a few dozen metres. Continue on this new cycle path, cross another small road and, at the second bend, continue straight ahead on a dirt track to reach the island. Then head for Saint Georges d'Oléron by road.
(8) In Saint Georges d'Oléron, turn left onto the main street and follow it until you reach the tourist office next to the church, then turn left to return to the car park where you started (S/E).
