From Miramas-le-Vieux to the Saint-Michel Chapel

Miramas-le-Vieux is a pretty little medieval village overlooking the northern part of the Étang de Berre, which is well worth a visit at the start or end of your walk. This route crosses the site of the former national gunpowder factory, which can be visited on Wednesdays or Sundays, heading towards the Chapelle Saint-Michel, which overlooks Istres, the Étang de l’Olivier and its fountain, and the Étang de Berre. Unfortunately, we were unable to complete the planned circular route as, as is often the case in Provence these days, wire mesh barriers have sprung up since our last visit two years ago, so we had to settle for the route published today.

Description of the walk

The route starts from the Miramas le Vieux car park, at the bottom of the village, at the end of Chemin du Vieux Château, 800 m from the D10 road linking Miramas to Saint-Chamas.

If you start by visiting the village, take the Way of the Cross, which climbs up to the ramparts, practically opposite the car park.

(1) Walk down the Chemin des Amandiers and take the path on the right, which heads west. After 350 m, the path joins the return route. Ignore the track branching off to the right.

(2) Cross the “Chemin de l’Étang” road with care and continue straight ahead onto the Chemin des Sources. You’ll reach a tarmac road; follow it southwards.

(3) Turn left onto the GR®13. Follow this path, which is clearly marked in yellow and red, all the way.

(4) The GR® crosses the canal, contrary to the map. Walk for 1 km.

(5) Cross the canal again and head up the left-hand side to continue on the GR®. Continue southwards, following the yellow and red markings.

(6) When you reach a track, turn right, then 30 m further on, turn immediately left to leave the GR®. Follow the track for 1,500 m until you rejoin the GR®. There are views of the lake on the left-hand side just before the mast.

(7) Continue left on the GR®.

(8) Take the small tarmac road, past a barrier, to reach the plateau of St-Michel Chapel, which overlooks Istres and the surrounding area. It’s a lovely spot for a picnic. Head back down the road and rejoin the path you took on the way there.

(7) Continue straight on along the GR®.

(9) Turn right just before the wire fences. Head towards point (6) .

(6) Head back down to the left and follow the GR®.

(10) Ignore the Yellow Cross and the Red Cross and continue this time on the left-hand side of the canal. Walk for approximately 1,200 m, pass point (4) and follow the yellow and red markers to the Chemin des Sources.

Cross the road again, taking care, to rejoin the path you took on the way out. Continue straight on to return to the car park (S/E)

A lovely, easy walk we did in April, surrounded by flowers, with varied scenery and beautiful views of the lake. We reached a 13th-century chapel, but from above we could see another chapel that looked even more impressive – though we couldn’t spot the path leading down to it?
