From Le Manon to Saint-Claude

Sixteenth stage of the Échappée Jurassienne. For this last stage, you will reach Septmoncel before beginning a long descent along the Chemin des Moines to the Gorges du Flumen. Walking along the Flumen, Grosdar and Tacon rivers, you will arrive at Saint-Claude, nestled in the Jura Mountains at the confluence of the Bienne and Tacon rivers.

Saint-Claude is not only the capital of briar pipes: heir to a long tradition of craftsmanship, the town has built a reputation for woodturning and diamond and gemstone cutting. Tucked away at the bottom of its valley, the town stands out for its rugged natural environment and unique heritage attractions, such as Saint-Pierre Cathedral, the Pipe and Diamond Museum, Le Monde des Automates and the Abbey Museum, a hub for lovers of modern art.

This walk is part of a multi-day hike: L'Échappée Jurassienne

Description of the walk

Red and yellow GRP® Tour de la Haute Bienne and Tour du Haut Jura signposts and specific signs bearing the symbol "J.

(S) From your accommodation or campsite, take the D297E4 and head north-west until you reach the exit of the hamlet of Manon.

(1) Leave the departmental road and turn right into the Bois du Gyps. Join the D472E4 under a high-voltage power line. Cross it carefully and follow the signs opposite for the Belvédère de la Luette. Continue along the grassy path heading north-west until you reach the viewpoint.

(2) Then continue to the right (east/northeast), following the signs. You will arrive at the D436, at the signpost "Le Gyps".

(3) Keep left on the path adjacent to the departmental road, following the signs for Septmoncel. After a short walk and a left-hand bend towards the south-west, cross the Ruisseau de Chapy before passing a few buildings. Continue to the fork, then turn right onto a paved road at a place called La Couronne.

(4) Continue straight ahead on the grassy path, following the signs for Septmoncel. The path descends gently until it joins the Route du Chapy.

(5) Turn right to continue on the Route de l'Étain. At the signpost "Sur l'Étain", keep right, following the signs for Septmoncel. Continue until you reach the Molok (semi-underground containers for waste collection).

(6) Turn right onto Chemin des Épines to reach Route de Genève in the village of Septmoncel. Turn left and continue to the fountain. (Provisions available at a Proximarché and a bakery)

(7) Cross the Route de Genève (D436) with caution and go up Rue Centrale, which starts to the left of the Proximarché. Go under the footbridge of the Dalloz factory. At the Place Centrale, continue left (south-west) onto Rue du Mont. Ignore the road that leads to Cantou des Saphirs and continue to the football field. (Please note that here I left the Échappée Jurassienne circuit to reach Saint-Claude via the Gorges du Flumen).

Yellow signposting

(8) Continue straight ahead towards Saint-Claude. After a long descent on Chemin des Moines, you will arrive on the D436 at the exit of the hamlet of Montbrillant.

(9) Turn left and walk very carefully along the D436 (be careful, there is no hard shoulder!). Continue to the La Roche Percée tunnel.

(10) Cross the tunnel with extreme caution, then take the path downhill 150 metres after the tunnel. Descend to the Le Flumen river.

(11) Cross the river via the footbridge and continue right on the path uphill until you reach a wide stony track (large water pipe at the side of the track).

(12) Continue north-west between the large pipe and the Flumen until you reach the hydroelectric power station.

(13) After the building, continue along the Foulessard path towards the north-west. Staying alongside the river, you will arrive at the D290, at a place called Le Martinet in Villard-St-Sauveur.

(14) Turn right, then cross the Pont de Martinet bridge over the Flumen river before arriving at the car park of Camping Le Martinet. (Depending on your train schedule, you will need to decide whether you have enough time to reach the station, bearing in mind that it is 4 km away).

(15) Continue on the D290 until you reach the bridge, then turn left to arrive at the swimming pool car park. Continue to the footbridge over the Grosdar.

(16) Cross the river and follow the Tennis Club Saint-Claudien on your left until you reach the D436. Without crossing, go around the roundabout, following the signs for Saint-Claude, and continue until you reach the bus shelter.

(17) Immediately after the bus stop, turn left down the steep path. Cross the Tacon river and follow the river on your right. Pass the Lycée du Pré Saint-Sauveur and continue to the Pont de Saint-Hubert.

(18) Cross the Tacon and continue to the left. Pass to the right of the entrance to the Centre Hospitalier Louis Jaillon, then continue up the Montée de la Pierre to arrive at the Place Gambetta car park. Keeping to the left, cross the car park to the Sous-Préfecture.

(19) Turn left and walk along the south wing of Saint-Pierre Cathedral. In front of the Abbey Museum, turn right to arrive at the entrance to the cathedral.

(20) After the cathedral, turn left onto the D437 and follow the signs for the town centre. Follow Rue du Marché, which becomes Rue du Pré. Pass the town hall and continue to Place du 9 Avril, where you will find the world's largest pipe.

(21) Cross the square until you reach the entrance to the Haut-Jura-Saint-Claude Conservatory of Music. (Walk around the entrance hall, where you will have a view of the River Bienne). With your back to the conservatory, continue to the left, then at the roundabout, continue straight ahead, following the signs for the station. At the traffic lights, turn left to reach the bridge.

(22) Cross the bridge, then continue left at the roundabout. Continue to the station (E).
