Description of the walk

Head to the village of La Terrasse-sur-Dorlay and park in the car park opposite the town hall, which is the starting point.

(S/E) Leave the car park, keeping the town hall on your left, and head towards the road and the bridge crossing the river (the Dorlay). Cross the bridge and immediately turn left onto the uphill street (Rue Antoine Micol). After about a hundred metres, you’ll reach a fork in the road; take the right-hand path. The tarmac road then turns into a dirt track, which you should follow straight on, overlooking the Dorlay dam. Ignore a path branching off to the right and continue straight on until you reach a junction.

(1) Leave the wide track you are on, which curves to the right, and take a slightly narrower track straight ahead (the start of this track is not shown on the map). Continue straight on this track, ignoring all the side tracks to the right and left. After about a kilometre, you will reach another track.

(2) Take this path on the right and continue along it. Stay on this main path as it climbs, ignoring the side paths on the right and left until you reach a fork.

(3) Take the path on the right downhill and continue until you reach another path where there is a Pilat Park hiking signpost.

(4) Continue to the right. After about 200 m, you’ll reach another junction with a hiking signpost; turn left. Continue along this path, ignoring the paths branching off to the right and left, until you arrive overlooking the hamlet of Bayolle le Haut and reach a junction of several paths (hiking signpost).

(5) Continue by taking the second path on the left. You will reach a tarmac road; follow this downhill towards the houses of the hamlet of Bayolle le Bas and a pond. Go to the end of the pond and go round it on the right to take the opposite bank.

(6) Immediately after the pond and the last houses in the hamlet, turn onto a dirt track on the right that leads uphill. Follow this track until you reach a busy tarmac road (D36). Take this road to the right for about 60 metres, taking care, and you will come to a three-way junction.

(7) Leave this and take the dirt track opposite. Continue uphill along this track. At the first junction, carry straight on, staying on the main track. Carry straight on again at the second junction, still staying on the main track. Further on, ignore a side track branching off to the right and, a few dozen metres later, leave the straight path and turn sharply left, still going uphill. Continue along the main track, passing a hairpin bend on the right. Reach the Col de Trente Sous.

(8) Continue to the left and stay on the main path until you reach the hamlet of Avaize.

(9) Cross this hamlet between the houses, heading straight downhill and staying on the Route des Bergeries, then the Chemin des Crêts. The tarmac section ends after the hamlet, turning into a dirt track which joins another track that you should take on the left. When you reach a junction, ignore the tracks leading off to the right and left and continue straight ahead.

(10) Cross a small ford and continue straight on downhill. Reach the first houses of the village of La Terrasse-sur-Dorlay and continue straight on towards the village centre, taking the Chemin des Souvenirs then Rue Louis Chapuis. Cross the bridge over the Dorlay again and head for the town hall car park (S/E).

Due to the bad weather and the extensive logging work, the paths were very muddy and at times impassable.
The scent of broom and Douglas fir reminds us that we are deep in the Pilat region.

Beautiful scenery and paths that are often wide and easy to walk on. Lovely views.
We would have liked a bit more information on the route, however: we had a few doubts about route no. 3, and we couldn’t find the ridge path at no. 10 – which the villagers didn’t know either – so we ended up taking the road.
Thank you for sharing this walk.

A lovely walk, mostly through woodland; best done in the morning depending on the weather. From marker 6 onwards, you walk for a good stretch in full sun with no shade. Also, at marker 6, the path on the right was impassable, so we had to continue along the tarmac road to the D36 and turn right to rejoin the route. Thank you for this lovely walk.

I was already familiar with the Col de Trente Sous, but this route is very pleasant and peaceful. Thank you for this lovely walk.

The route starts with an hour and a half through coniferous woodland, followed by open countryside with views of the Crêt de l'Oeillon and the Gier Valley; you’ll pass through hamlets where you can buy local produce; there’s very little road, making it a very pleasant walk; there are no steep climbs or technical difficulties.
The Visio Rando GPS is essential as the route is not signposted; there are a few park signs, but not enough given the many paths in the forest. The route is well described but there aren’t many landmarks to aid navigation in the forest.
A pleasant, refreshing walk; no notable sights
