From Guebwiller to the Grand Ballon

This hike will take you up to the Grand Ballon, the highest peak in the Vosges mountains, rising to 1,424 metres. From the summit, weather permitting, you can enjoy an exceptional panoramic view across the whole of the Alsace plain, the Black Forest and even as far as the Alps. Along the way, you’ll pass through a variety of landscapes, from coniferous and deciduous forests to clearings and pastures. As you gain altitude, you’ll notice how the flora of the Vosges changes.

Description of the walk

Parking: Sandgrube fitness trail

(S/E) From the car park at the ‘Sandgrube’ fitness trail, take the forest track marked with a Red Rectangle crossed by a white bar until you reach the first junction. Turn right onto the path marked with a Blue Cross, then left onto the path marked with a Red Rectangle crossed by a white bar (forest track). Cross one forest track to reach another.

(1) Continue straight on, following the ‘Red Rectangle with a White Bar’ markings, along a forest track leading to Peternit Rosstall (549 m). Climb to the left to the Col de Peternit (566 m) via the path marked with a ‘Red Rectangle with a White Bar’.

(2) Carry on straight ahead twice, then turn right, following the southern slope, to reach Munsteraeckerlé (655 m): a picnic shelter.

(3) Follow the Red Rectangle with a white bar markings all the way to the Grand Ballon. From Munsteraeckerlé, veer sharply left then right onto the path overlooking the track and, approaching from the southern slope, climb to the Col du Judenhut (973m) via the Ebeneck. At the Ebeneck, cross the track twice. At the T-junction, continue to the left, then straight on to the Col de Judenhut, where you’ll find the Club Vosgien de Guebwiller shelter and the Schlumberger Fountain.

(4) Turn left then right and, via the southern slope, climb through the Belchenwald to the Grand Ballon. At the track, keep left, then turn right to cross a second track and then a path marked with a Red Diamond. After an old ski lift, turn right to emerge next to the restaurant La Vue des Alpes (1,341m). The Grand Ballon chalet-hotel, owned by CV Strasbourg, is situated above the Route des Crêtes. It is possible to climb to the summit at an altitude of 1,424 m via a path marked with a Red Disc or Red Rectangle.

(5) From the pass, turn left onto the Route des Crêtes, then take the Red Rectangle-marked trail on the left, which leads to the Firstacker (995 m) via the Grand Ballon farmhouse inn. Leave the tracks on your right, then cross the road at the Grand Ballon farmhouse inn. Further on, continue downhill, cross the road again and head to the next junction. Turn right towards the Firstacker.

(6) Take the second forest track on the left marked with a Red Rectangle crossed out in white. Ignore a track leading down to the left and pass through the Sudel and over the Diefenbach heights. Continue straight on at the next junction, then keep left until you reach the path marked with a blue triangle. Continue along the second track on the right and carry on straight ahead until you reach Rimbach via the Schwarzbach.

(7) Once you reach the D5.1, cross the road and head up to the Col de Peternit via the forest track marked with a Red Rectangle crossed out in White.

(2) Follow the second path on the right, marked with a Blue Triangle, to Lindloch.

(8) From the pass, join the path via an unmarked descent to the left, cutting across a first track and then a second to reach the Sandgrube car park (S/E).

Worth a visit

The name ‘Grand Ballon’ appears to be relatively recent. According to Latin sources, it is thought to have been known as ‘Pelens’ or ‘Beleus Mons’, in reference to an ancient cult dedicated to Bellenus. Its name in the 16th century was ‘Belchenkopf’ or ‘Belchen’ (balloon), which was adopted by the Germans in 1871 as ‘Grosser Belchen’. It was not until 1927 that the summit of the Vosges came to be known as ‘Grand Ballon’.

A superb hike that feels like a climb, with a steep ascent that leads step by step to the Grand Ballon. The heat of the day could have been discouraging, but the generous shade of the forest made the effort much easier. Once at the top, I decided to prolong the experience with a loop to the stele: an unmissable detour. There, the view opens up to a 360-degree horizon, a breathtaking panorama that rewards every step. In total, nearly 21 kilometres of escape and beauty.

A very beautiful hike starting from Guebwiller. We set off on a very hot day, climbing along shaded paths to the chalets of the Grand Ballon. We pushed on to the summit for the view, which is truly magnificent. However, the return journey was more difficult. The route from the summit to the Auberge du Grand Ballon farm is closed by the Club Vosgien (red rectangle), so we had to retrace our steps and then take the René Girny chalet route to get back to the end of the hike. The end of the hike is also poorly signposted due to forestry work and the low number of visitors. Overall, it was 24 km and 1,200 metres of elevation gain. A very nice outing nonetheless.

Very well-maintained trails (except for point 8, which is more or less off the trail).
It would be a shame not to climb the Grand Ballon, the highlight of this hike. Doing so as part of the traverse doesn't add much, and the views are sublime.
On the way back, after the closed refuge, there are long, endless forest tracks.
A total of 20 km for me.
Few people (a few trail runners) except at the Grand Ballon, where it's very crowded! Several farm inns for refreshments.

A lovely, fairly challenging hike starting from Guebwiller and heading to the Grand Ballon, a superb spot with breathtaking views (it’s a shame all the picnic areas were closed)
Lovely stretches through the forest, with well-marked paths.
