Description of the walk

The departure point is Corveissiat, near the Salle des Fêtes or Place Charles Bletel below.

(S/E) Take Impasse Salle des Fêtes, then turn left onto Rue sur la Roche. Cross the D936 carefully and continue straight on towards the Châtillon cliffs.

(1) About 400 metres further on, turn left onto a path following the direction of the cliffs and climb up. After heading south-east, the path turns left (the IGN map is inaccurate here).

(2) Turn left and you will soon reach a beautiful viewpoint over the Ain Valley and the Reculée de Corveissiat (be careful of the cliff). Retrace your steps.

(2) Continue left (south). Stay close to the edge of the cliffs (the IGN map is also inaccurate here). Go straight ahead to a viewpoint indicated by a sign, which you will see shortly after on the left, a few metres away. Without following the yellow trail suggested to the right, continue south-west along the edge of the cliff (remain cautious).

(3) Turn right onto a carriageway. Head north for about 700 metres.

(4) At an intersection, take the left path following the direction of Racouze Direct. You will soon reach a road; follow it to the left. About 50 metres further on, take a path on the right.

(5) Directly below a high-voltage power line, you will come to a road. Turn right and follow it.

(6) At the crossroads, take thesecond path on the left (west), uphill. At a fork, take the path on the left. Continue along the path (south-west) for more than 2 km, climbing steadily. You will arrive at the heart of the hamlet of Racouze, marked by a large grassy area.

(7) Continue straight ahead towards the oven below. Head straight towards Impasse de la Fontaine, then continue to the right at an intersection near a wash house (towards Petit-Corent).

(8) At the T-junction, continue to the right and follow the yellow markings. Take a pleasant path through a meadow (viewpoint over the Suran valley) and then through the undergrowth.

(9) Near the hamlet of Petit-Corent, you will come to a path at a hairpin bend. Follow it to the right uphill (yellow and red markings). Stay on the main marked path and ignore any side paths. Pass a crossroads with several directions at an elevation of 601 metres.

(10) Turn left towards La Chartreuse. After passing through a meadow, the route follows more or less the bottom of a small valley (yellow and redGR® de Pays markings; the IGN route is inaccurate here) for a short while. After a bend in the route, join another path and continue straight ahead.

(11) Pass under the Pont de l'Abbaye bridge and walk between a wall and the bed of the Ruisseau de Sélignac stream. Take a small road and follow it to the right until you reach the Chartreuse de Sélignac.

(12) Just before the entrance to the Chartreuse, turn left towards a statue and take an uphill path. After a steep climb, turn right at the intersection. You will reach another intersection in a relatively flat area.

(13) Take thefirst path on the right to quickly reach a viewpoint (cross). Retrace your steps.

(13) Turn right, then fairly quickly right again, for another round trip, to reach asecond viewpoint (follow the signs on site). Retrace your steps again.

Once back, continue to the right (north, yellow markings). The route then follows a good carriage road leading to Arnans.

(14) Cross the village of Arnans to the war memorial (Place du 19 Mars 1962). Follow the D3 to the right towards Aromas. At the sign marking the end of the built-up area, take a path on the right leading downhill. A little further down, join a small road and follow it to the left for a few metres.

(15) Take a path on the left uphill. The path then winds its way between meadows and wooded areas downhill (a few yellow markers).

(16) When you reach a clearly visible junction, turn left towards the hamlet of Lavillat. Ignore a road on the right and continue to the hamlet, which is very close by (square with a fountain).

(17) Continue straight ahead (following the signpost). A little further down, continue straight ahead on Route d'Arnans.

(18) After a left turn, turn right onto Route de Lavillat. Enter the village of Coveissiat. Continue right onto Pente à Gachy, then ignore the two street crossings you encounter. Turn right onto Rue sur la Roche until you reach Impasse Salle des Fêtes and return to the starting point (S/E).

Worth a visit

Chartreuse de Sélignac: this is a former Carthusian monastery founded in 1202.

Grotte de Corveissiat: I recommend a short detour to this site, which is not far from the starting point (please note that access to the cave is closed to the public).

Saint-Maurice Church in Saint-Maurice-d'Échazeaux: this is located about 3 km north-east of Corveissiat on a site overlooking the Ain valley.

Cize-Bolozon Viaduct: this pretty railway and road bridge crosses the River Ain. It can be glimpsed on this route just before the hamlet of Racouze.

Always be cautious and plan ahead when you're outdoors. Visorando and the author of this route cannot be held responsible for any accidents occurring on this route.

A very beautiful hike with many scenic viewpoints. There is a lovely little waterfall before the monastery and a splendid view above it.

I really enjoyed this hike, which started with lots of views of the Ain along the route. I was lucky enough to spot two deer on the hillside near the cliffs. There was quite a bit of pleasant walking through the woods, even in autumn. There was a nice climb after the Chartreuse de Sélignac, which you can admire at Point 13. That's where I put down my bag and took out my snack. Thank you for suggesting this beautiful hike.

No moths and few fallen trees today. Varied, interesting trail: sharp limestone pavement on the initial ridge, beautiful views of the Ain, then the Chartreuse, good climb from the Chartreuse, between 10 and the Chartreuse the terrain is quite slippery.
In short, a good trail to follow.

Beautiful hike, perfect description and well commented. I used the GPX track. The only problem was the large number of moths.

We did a "reverse" version of the route, starting from Arnans and heading down to Tête Beguine to begin with.
After passing under the road (Pont de l'Abbaye), the GR country trail is well marked. However, many trees have fallen across the path, making progress difficult until the Petit Corent/Racouse junction (altitude 630).
We took advantage of our passage through Corvessiat to walk down along the La Balme stream, which has a beautiful waterfall at this time of year.

The hike begins with a series of viewpoints over the Ain Valley that are not to be missed, even if you have seen them many times before. It is the charm of this wild river that works its magic! Then you'll be surprised to discover the Chartreuse de Sélignac at the bottom of a valley, which you can admire from higher up at point 13. Best done in good weather because of the many passages through the woods. Thanks to the author of this beautiful walk.
