Park next to the bread oven in the hamlet of Saint-Maurice-des-Chasaux (d'Echazeaux).
(S/E) Start the hike on the paved road heading east and turn right at the first Y-junction, following the yellow markings. The paved road becomes increasingly bumpy and descends into the undergrowth, gradually climbing. The road turns into a forest path.
(1) Take a sharp left onto a path that goes into the woods. The signs are yellow. Keep climbing without any major difficulties until you reach the first viewpoint, where you can take a short break on a small stone bench while looking down at the Ain River below.
(2) Continue north on the path and you will soon arrive at the charming Saint-Maurice Chapel and its small cemetery.
(3) Continue north, taking the tiny path that runs along the chapel wall. The path climbs gradually into the woods and from time to time on your right you will find viewpoints overlooking the confluence of the Ain and Valouse rivers. After a climb, the signposts indicate that you should turn left and descend into the woods.
(4) You can make a round trip to visit the ruins of Montdidier Castle. This small detour is not signposted (there is even a yellow X at the crossroads) but it is well worth the detour. Be careful to return to the original path to descend back to the marked trail and do not descend eastward after the castle. After a steep descent along the path through the woods, you will find the ruins of a well and a trough. Then you will come to a crossroads.
(5) Here, turn left to descend gently towards the road to the chapel, which you will follow to the right and return to your starting point in the village (S/E).
