From Coignières to Villiers-Saint-Frédéric through the Yvelines

This is the thirty-fourth and final stage of the Grand Tour of Île-de-France via the GR®11. It starts in Coignières and ends in Villiers-Saint-Frédéric, where the radial section of the GR® coming from Paris meets the circular section, which will therefore be completed here. The route follows, more or less closely, the course of the Mauldre River, passing through Bazoches-sur-Guyonne, Mareil-le-Guyon and Neauphle-le-Vieux.

This walk is part of a multi-day hike: Grand tour of Île-de-France in 34 stages on the GR®11

Description of the walk

Access: Coignièresstation on the Rambouillet branch of the Transilien N line.

Red and white markings (GR®11)

(S) Go to the roundabout opposite the main station building and first turn right then left onto a small path leading to the RN10. Take the underpass and continue along the street opposite until you reach the church on the right.

(1) Continue straight ahead, with the town on your right and fields on your left. You will reach the wall of a park at a memorial stone.

(2) Take Allée des Pommiers on the left, along the wall. You will reach a gate.

(3) Go through the gate, which marks the entrance to private property where the GR® is authorised to pass (do not stray from the path, see practical information). Cross the Hautes Bruyères estate as you descend into the upper Mauldre valley until you reach the banks of the Grand Étang on your left. Continue to the dyke.

(4) Turn left to cross the dyke. At the end, take the path on the right that goes uphill (crossing the barrier to leave the private estate). Continue to a three-way junction, slightly to the left.

(5) Turn left to continue climbing and reach the village of Saint-Rémy l'Honoré. When you reach Rue de la Garenne, take the street on the right until you reach the church.

(6) Take the main street on the left, then Rue Saint-Nicolas on the right, after the town hall.

(7) After about 100 metres, take a path on the right that descends alongside an internal road in a residential area. After about 200 metres, cross a road and continue straight ahead until you reach Cour aux Pineaux.

(8) Take the path that branches off to the right and climbs into the woods. You will come to a crossroads at the top.

(9) Turn left at an acute angle and follow the path, which eventually descends.

(10) At the bottom, turn right at an acute angle just before the road and follow the path for about 400 metres. Turn left to continue climbing into the woods and follow the curve to the right.

(11) After the curve, turn left and leave the GR® for a moment to head towards Bazoches-sur-Guyonne. Pass in front of the Louis Carré house, after a descent, and reach the entrance to Jean Monnet's house.

No markings

(12) Pass to the right of the Monnet house, following the Chemin du Vieux Pressoir. Continue down Rue du Rocher Marquant. You will reach a crossroads with a street on the right and a path on the left.

(13) Take the small path on the left. Pass through a wash house (you may need to push open a door), then continue until you reach a T-junction with Chemin du Petit Gué. Follow it to the right to rejoin the road after about 500 metres.

(14) Turn left, then right to stay in the same general direction. You will reach Route de Chevreuse, the main street. Pass in front of the church and rejoin the GR® coming from the right. Continue along the road downhill until you reach a four-way junction.

Red and white markings (GR®11)

(15) Turn left towards the Ferme de Montphilippe. Leave it on your left and follow the path that bends to the left after the groves. Join another path and you will come to a three-way junction.

(16) Take the path on the left. Head towards Mareil-le-Guyon, the village visible opposite. You will come out onto Route de la Garenne. Follow it to the right until you reach a crossroads (the entrance to the château is on the left, the church is opposite).

(17) Go straight ahead into Grand Rue and walk past the church on your left.

(18) When the main road turns left, turn right onto a small road and cross the Guyonne. Continue along the road through the fields, pass the cemetery and reach a path coming from the left, taken by the GR®1.

(19) Continue in the same direction on the GR®1-GR®11 trail. At the T-junction, turn right and walk along the N12. Cross the road on a bridge next to the exit ramp and continue to the roundabout opposite. Continue on the right on the D912 (cross carefully at the exit of the roundabout) until you reach a three-way junction.

(20) Take a small road on the left towards Neauphle-le-Vieux and cross a hamlet. Cross the railway line at the level crossing. Continue straight on until you reach the entrance to Neauphle-le-Vieux.

(21) Cross the road and continue straight ahead into the village. At a three-way junction in the road, continue straight ahead (temporarily leaving the GR®) onto Rue de l'Amandier, which goes uphill.

(22) Take the second right, Rue aux Moutons. At the corner of the town hall, turn left into Rue de la Libération and rejoin the GR®.

(23) Turn right onto the D11, which descends, and leave the church on your left (the pavements are safe but the path between two high walls is not very pleasant). Follow the bend to the right and cross the Mauldre river below.

(24) Immediately afterwards, turn left onto Rue Charles de Gaulle, between the fields on the left and the houses on the right. You will reach a junction with Route de Beynes (D191).

(25) Cross the road at the pedestrian crossing. Continue straight ahead into the business park. Just before the level crossing, turn left between the buildings and the railway line. You will reach a crossroads at a bridge under the railway line, just to the right. The GR®11 circular loop is now complete.

No markings

(26) Turn right, passing under the railway bridge. Take the first path on the right and follow it to a road. Follow this road to the right.

(27) Turn left just before the level crossing and continue to the station, about 400 m further on, on the right (E).

Return: Villiers-Neauphle-Pontchartrainstation on the Dreux branch of the Transilien N line.

Notes

(S) Coignières station on the Rambouillet branch of the Transilien N line (Montparnasse network). Generally two trains per hour in each direction.

(E) Villiers-Neauphle-Pontchartrain station on the Dreux branch of the same Transilien N line. One train per hour in each direction.

See theÎle-de-France Mobilités website for timetables.

At the Coignières exit at point (3), the GR® enters private property. The GR® and a few other trails crossing the estate have been granted public right of way, as indicated by the signs at the entrance. Please respect the property by staying on the authorised paths! The passage through private property continues until the end of the Grand Étang dyke crossing, when you climb back up towards (5).

At (11), the route leaves the GR® and heads towards the village of Bazoches-sur-Guyonne, which has a few points of interest: the house designed by architect Louis Carré, Jean Monnet's house just opposite, and a house that was used as the setting for a cult scene in a 1970s film! The GR® is rejoined shortly after the church, before (15). It is of course entirely possible to stay on the GR® between (11) and (15) if you want to shorten the stage a little.

The route suggests heading to (26), the junction of the radial and circular sections of the GR®. But if your main goal is to reach Villiers-Neauphle-Pontchartrain station, you can get there directly by turning right at (25), or by continuing straight on after (25), crossing the level crossing and turning right immediately afterwards.

Hike completed on 31 December 2025 with the goal of having covered the entire GR® 11 in exactly two years!
