From Châteauneuf-en-Auxois to Chaudenay-le-Château

This magnificent village, which ranks among the most beautiful villages in France, is well worth a visit for its wonderful medieval fortress. Pass through the pretty villages of Bouhey and Crugey with their wash houses, then cross the Burgundy Canal.

Description of the walk

Start: Place du Marché, in front of the town hall, 6 Grande Rue, Châteauneuf-en-Auxois.

(S) With your back to the square, turn left and walk up Grande Rue to Place aux Bœufs.

(1) Turn right and head down Rue du Faubourg.

(2) At the bottom, turn left towards La Bussière (beautiful view opposite), leave the last houses behind via Rue du Faubourg, and continue on the C4. Ignore a path branching off to the right, and you’ll soon reach the next one.

(3) Take the path that descends to the right, through pastureland. Follow a low wall, cross the Creuse, and arrive at a fork.

(4) Keep to the right, cross a wood, then follow the fields, and reach a road.

(5) Turn right, and at the next junction, keep right, heading towards La Chaux.

(6) A few metres before the houses, leave the road and take the path on the right, between woods and fields, until you reach a fork.

(7) Turn left and you’ll reach a track suitable for vehicles. Continue straight ahead until you reach a three-way junction.

(8) Turn right and follow the high-voltage power lines. Continue along the tarmac road until you reach a junction.

(9) Take a sharp right-hand bend and reach the D18B, after passing the cemetery.

(10) Follow it to the right, taking the wide bend to the left, and enter Bouhey. Cross the village, passing a restored wash house (magnificent trompe l’œil). At the Fork in the road, continue to the right onto Rue Serrée and reach Saint-Claude Church.

(11) Head downhill to the left and, immediately, turn right onto a footpath. Follow it straight on, then continue along the tarmac road until the next junction.

(12) Continue to the right, downhill, cross the bridge over the Autoroute du Soleil and arrive immediately at the Canal de Bourgogne

(13) Take the towpath on the left and follow the canal on your right. Pass the Écluse des Érables, then, after the Écluse de Crugey, you’ll reach the bridge over the canal.

(14) Take it to the right, then turn immediately left at the War Memorial and the wash house on your left, then quickly right onto Grande Rue Haute. Head uphill through the village of Crugey, continue along Rue de l’Odeu, pass a wash house on your left, and head downhill to theD115B.

(15) Follow it to the left, slightly uphill, and follow the Ruisseau de Préron. Enter the village of Chaudenay-le-Château, and head straight on to the church (S/E).
