From Buysscheure to the Booneghem Marshes

Starting from the path to Paradis, in the shade of the hawthorn hedges, come and discover the large wet pastures, the Booenghem marsh and the nature barn. Then cross the Bachelin marshes and peat bogs before following the magnificent path that runs alongside the River Booneghem through the small marsh. This circular route mainly follows paths.

Description of the walk

Start from the car park at Buyscheure church.

GR®128-GR® de l'Yser, marked in white and red

(S/E) Head towards the Estaminet Den Boeren (west) and take the dead-end street, Boeren Weg. Continue along the path, turn left, carry on straight ahead, pass the Devulder Mill on your right and arrive at a junction.

(1) Turn right, pass under a power line and arrive at a junction.

(2) Turn left, heading due south, and arrive near the marshes.

(3) Turn right towards the west, ignore the road on the left towards Booneghem and arrive at the footbridge to enter the Booneghem Marshes.

End of the GR®128-GR® de l'Yse

(4) Leave the GR®, turn left onto the path that crosses this marsh and arrive at the Zieux stream.

(5) Use the ferry to reach the opposite bank and continue right along the path for a few dozen metres, then take a path on the left and cross the Lefebvre Marsh. You will reach a path running alongside the road.

(6) Follow it to the left, join the Route du Romelaere and turn right at the first right. Take the wooden footbridge to reach the nature barn with picnic tables or a restaurant for lunch.

(7) Walk past the nature barn again, cross the wooden footbridge once more, and turn right onto Chemin de Booneghem, which runs alongside the river. Continue along the path (with the Marais du Bachelin on the left and the peat bogs on the right).

(8) Take the metal footbridge on the right and continue along the River Booneghem until you reach a crossroads.

(9) Turn right (small junction), head towards a ‘white private gate’, and take the small path to the right of this gate, with the River Booneghem on your right. A small bridge takes you to the other side of the river; be careful, as the path is narrow and slippery when wet (small marsh on the left). Continue past the Ferme du Paradis. After passing under a power line, you’ll reach a path.

(10) Turn left, follow the PR® sign, go up the path and follow the road straight on to Hoveraere Street.

(11) Take the footbridge on the right and follow the “Vers le Paradis” path.

(12) Turn left, following the “Vers le Paradis” path, and join a road.

(13) Cross the road (Flemish gate and sculpture), then further on turn left towards a cemetery, walk past a school and arrive at the church car park (S/E).
