Description of the walk

Start from the small car park by Brenas Church (often full at weekends).

(S/E) Retrace your steps to the Fork in the road, take the right-hand lane and, immediately afterwards, turn right onto the Ancien Chemin de Vernazoubres. The steep lane quickly becomes a tarmac track leading to the last few houses. Follow this track to the second junction, just past a telecoms mast.

(1) Leave the main track and turn left onto a path through the woods, climbing westwards then north-westwards to the Crête du Mont Caussil (elevation 504)

(2) Turn right onto the Chemin de Campillergues, which winds through the woods on the western flank of Montbringues. After about 300 m, the path crosses the stream, then descends to join the Chemin des Lignières, leading to the Vernoubrel ford.

(3) At the ford, cross the Vernoubrel stream to reach Vernazoubres, a charming little village nestled against a limestone cliff, with its old houses adorned with flowers. At the crossroads in the centre of the village, turn right onto Rue Roque Colombe. On leaving the village, continue for about 400 m along the Chemin des Aires, a small tarmac road. Walk past a quarry on your left.

(4) About a hundred metres past the quarry, leave the road and take a wide path climbing up the hill. As you leave the quarry, the path veers right towards the south-west and runs along the right-hand side of a large field bordering a woodland, then climbs up to the ridge as far as the Croix de la Durante.

(5) At the junction at the Croix de la Durante, turn left onto the ridge path over the Serre de la Bardine and head south along the lava flow, following a section ofthe GR®7to Valquières.

(6) In the village of Valquières, leave the village to the east, following a short stretch of the D8E5 departmental road towards Dio. After about 150 m, just before a long field bordering the left-hand side of the road, leave the departmental road and take a path on the left (markedGR®7). The path descends gently through the woods. Follow theGR® for about 300 m. At the fork just before the stream, leave theGR® and take a path on the left, heading down towards the Ruisseau Le Garel until you reach the ford.

(7) At the ford on the Garel, cross the stream at a circular bend in the track and immediately head back up the other side. Feel free to cut across the hairpin bends of the track, which is overgrown with brambles. Shortly before the Col des Baumes, the track joins the D8E5 departmental road. Follow the road for about a hundred metres to the Col des Baumes junction.

(8) Turn left onto the D8E6 departmental road. Follow the road for about 500 metres until you find a path starting on the right (before the pumping station). Leave the road and take the path on your right, which winds down to the Vernoubrel stream. Cross the stream and head up the western slope of Montbringues until you reach the junction with the Chemin des Lignières.

(9) Follow the path to the right to the Puit des Lignières (tapped spring).

(10) Continue off the path for about 200 metres, following the dry stream bed for a good hundred metres. Very soon, you’ll reach a rock face and the confluence of two streams. Leave the main stream bed here and head up to the right, off the beaten track and through the woods, for another hundred metres or so until you cross the Chemin de Campillergues, which you took on the way there.
Turn right onto the path that climbs south-west and takes you back to the Crête du Mont Caussil.

(2) Leave the path you took on the way there on your left and continue along the Chemin de Campillergues. This descends due south through the Ségala woods and joins the D157 county road just before the bridge over the Ruisseau de Lirou.

(11) Immediately after the bridge, leave the road and take the path on your right, the ‘Ancien Chemin du Col de la Merquière à Brénas’. This runs alongside the D157 departmental road, overlooking it, and rejoins it very quickly at the entrance to Brénas. At the entrance to the village, take the first uphill street on your left and continue to the church (S/E).

It was lovely because we did it in the spring on a day when the sun wasn’t shining. Flowers and birdsong all along the way.
On the other hand, there was too much road cycling for our liking.

An interesting hike, made all the more challenging by ‘bartassage’ – GPS tracks that get lost in a landscape where nature has reclaimed its rights!
Between 6 and 7, the path leaving the GR is barely visible and rarely used, so it’s overgrown with branches and brambles (pruning shears recommended). The gate blocking the ford over the Garel is intended for people coming from the opposite direction; as we’re leaving private property, we’ll have to climb over the gate!
Between 9 and 10, as you approach Le Vernoubrel, the GPS track that runs beneath the retaining wall is impassable; follow the hairpin bend, head down into the meadow to the stream and follow it to the left along a path that rejoins the track further on. Between Le Vernoubrel and the Chemin de la Liquière, you’ll have to follow your instincts!
Between 10 and 2, it’s impossible to follow the stream bed, which is overgrown with uprooted trees and brambles; once you reach the ‘confluence’, head as best you can to the right to rejoin the GPS track.
Apart from that, everything’s fine – that’s what makes a hike memorable and also reminds us that GPS hasn’t always existed and that we’ve always managed to find our way!

Thank you for clarifying that!

The car park at the village entrance is very new (it opened in early October to coincide with the start of the hunting season). I’m not sure if it’s permanent, as the signs are homemade and unofficial.

Picking chestnuts and mushrooms is indeed prohibited as the woods are privately owned. However, it’s still possible to do so at the side of the path. Personally, when I come across a family in my chestnut grove, I politely explain to them that the woods are private but that they’re welcome to take a few handfuls of chestnuts. It’s all a question of moderation ;-)

Otherwise, did you enjoy the walk, and were you able to find your way without too much trouble?

Kind regards.
Eric

As the car park at Place de Brenas is full, a parking area has been set up below the village, less than 80 metres away. It is signposted at the entrances.
One further point: picking chestnuts is prohibited, as the woods are on private land...

The first path up Mont Caussil is impossible to find; between points 4 and 5, you have to cross a series of barbed-wire fences with grass up to your knees, and finally, when you leave the GR, you come up against a padlocked fence. In short, this is a route for those who enjoy a bit of a struggle or simply like wandering through private property,

A very pleasant walk in beautiful surroundings, undertaken on 22 May 2021, to point (8).
As there are no signposts, the Visorando GPS app is essential.
Between points (4) and (5), there are several fences to cross via gates (please close them behind you)
After point (6), the path to take when leaving the GR towards the ford (7) is overgrown and needs clearing.
There is a problem at the bridge at point (7): the crossing is blocked by a padlocked gate, which is impossible to get round, but fortunately, the key to the padlock was hanging from the top of the left-hand pillar (please put the key back where you found it!).
We had to stop the walk at point (8) following a fall.
