In the woodland around Chasselay

A hike through the woodland that mainly follows unmarked paths; GPS and the Visorando hiking app are recommended, and the route should be undertaken in dry weather. There are a few very steep sections; walking poles are recommended. The hike takes approximately 3½ hours. Get your walking boots on.

Description of the walk

Park in the Étang de Chasselay car park.

(S/E) Walk back up Rue de l'Étang, ignoring the dead-end streets branching off to the right.
Turn left onto Rue des Darbonnières and then right onto Rue de Génévréant until you reach Chemin de Poleymieux.
Follow this path to the left, ignoring the paths on the left and right, until you reach the T-junction with Chemin de la Collonge.

(1) Take the mountain bike trail that heads into the undergrowth opposite, at the foot of a tree with a sign indicating that dogs must be kept on a lead, and follow this trail until it joins the path leading to Saint-Germain-au-Mont-d'Or. Continue along the path to the left for 350m.

(2) Take the path that climbs steeply to the right. At the top, keep to the right of the teepee-shaped tree hut and continue along the path.
At the next junction, turn left onto the gently sloping path.
When you reach the junction of the paths leading to Saint-Germain au Mont-d'Or, keep to the right.

(3) Turn onto the path on the right, with log steps, and arrive at a T-junction. Turn left onto Chemin de Chasselay and follow it.
At the signpost, turn right onto the path towards En Borde.

(4) Turn slightly right and continue to the mountain bike track, marked by a V-shaped tree.

(5) Turn right and follow the path for about 750m as it descends gently, ignoring the paths to the right and left.

(6) Turn left onto the path leading to La Madone.
Please note that the path is not clearly marked and there is a short steep section.
When you reach the Madone, there are rocks there where you can stop for a pleasant break.
Retrace your steps and take the path on the left.
Walk for about 100m, then take the path that descends to the left.
Be careful: there is a steep slope descending for about 150m.

(7) When you reach the path at the bottom, turn left then take the path leading off to the right.
Stay on the path that follows the stream.
When you reach the bottom of the path, with a meadow on your right, cross the stream via the small bridge and continue along the path. Pass the hairpin bend and head up the gently sloping path to the left.

(8) At the junction, turn right and follow the path uphill for 400m.
When you reach the geological trail, turn right towards Chasselay. Follow the path downhill for about 600m.
You will arrive at Montée du Plantin; Château du Plantin is on the right.
Walk down the Montée du Plantin and turn right into Rue de l'Étang, where the car park is located (S/E).

A very pleasant walk, especially in summer when it’s very hot, as almost 90% of the route is through woodland. In winter, the ground is very slippery due to the slush.
A very easy walk to follow, but I have a GPS.
There are a huge number of fallen trees along the route. You have to either go under or over them, which can be difficult for some people.
On arrival, there are parking spaces near a pond; this is the starting point of the walk. Please note that there is currently roadworks, so there is very little space available.

A very beautiful hike in the woods with occasional stunning views. Ideal in hot weather. However, some sections of the trail require caution. With the map, it is easy to follow the route.

Dated 25 May 2024. It was a lovely walk; my legs are feeling it.
TERRAIN
As mentioned, this walk is a bit ‘rough’ due to the unmarked paths, which are more or less overgrown with vegetation.
But what makes this particularly rainy year of 2024 so distinctive is that even at the end of May it’s VERY muddy!
Our equine friends pass back and forth here, creating muddy patches that are sometimes difficult to get around. You can see the tracks of their hooves absolutely everywhere, and you can tell they’re slipping too!
You’ll definitely need high-top walking boots if you don’t want your shoes filled with mud.
Between point 1 and point 2, I hesitated to turn back because the muddy patch took up the whole width of the path. I had to find sections on the sides that were a bit less soft so my foot wouldn’t sink in completely.
I wouldn’t risk this hike between October and April, but everyone does what they want.
ENVIRONMENT
It is almost entirely wooded, so ideal in hot weather.
SLOPE
The only really steep climb, in my view, is after point 2. The rest is manageable.
TRAFFIC
On this lovely May weekend, we must have come across about ten walkers, two cyclists and two horse riders. Suffice to say that for the Monts d’Or, this is not very busy.
It must be said that the northern part of the mountains is steeper and wilder than the other sections. Hence the obvious advantage of starting from Chasselay.
IN CONCLUSION
I really enjoyed this ‘wild’ hike, with plenty of nature and few signposts. A lovely time spent simply walking.

Thanks for this guide. This walk is very close to Lyon, making it ideal for an afternoon out, for example. The route is well marked; we just had a bit of trouble finding the statue – we’d gone a bit too far – you need to turn right at a hairpin bend to head towards it. Be careful: the ground is quite steep as you approach the statue, so it’s quite slippery, and you can’t see the statue from the front!
