In the Trudner Horn Nature Park, between Altrei and Krabesalm

A relatively easy walk through the forests of the Trudner Horn Nature Park on the border between South Tyrol (Alto Adige) and Trentino.
Beautiful views of the surrounding mountains, particularly the Trudner Horn (Monte Corno). Visit the small village of Altrei (Anterivo) and its beautiful church with views over the Val di Cembra.

Description of the walk

Italy – South Tyrol (Alto Adige) on the Dolomites route, the SS48, between Cavalese and Montan.
Leave the SS48 at the San Lugano Pass and take the SP79 towards Altrei (Anterivo).
Shortly after entering the village, you’ll find a car park on the left, which is the starting point for the walk

(S/E) Start from the village car park. Take the street opposite the car park (Gottschalkstrasse) and walk past the town hall, the post office and the shops.

(1) Carry on straight ahead at the first junction. At the second junction, take the road on the left towards the Hotel Waldheim.

(2) Walk past the hotel. Shortly afterwards, take the path on the right, marked number 3, towards the Ziss Sattel. The path runs alongside a ‘Kneipp’-style water therapy facility. Carry on along path no. 3 through the forest, with lovely views of the Val di Cembra (where grappa is produced) and the Trudner Horn (Monte Corno). About 1 km past the Hotel Waldheim, you’ll pass a lime kiln typical of the region.
You arrive at the Ziss Sattel (1,384 m above sea level).

(3) In fact, you are just before the actual Ziss Sattel, which is a pass from which several paths lead off, notably towards Truden or the Trudner Horn. Take the path on the right towards Malga Pausa and Krabes Alm. The path continues to climb and, after 1 km and an S-bend, you reach Malga Pausa, a hamlet of a few farmhouses.

(4) Shortly afterwards, you join path no. 9, which comes in from the left (Krabes Waldweg). After about 900 metres, you leave path no. 9 and turn left towards the Krabes Alm. You’ll find yourself in a large clearing and head straight on. You’ll reach the Krabes Alm.

(5) This is the highest point of the walk at 1,547 m. The Krabes Alm is a mountain inn where you can enjoy a meal on a large terrace. Please note: it gets very busy on Sundays. There is a beautiful panoramic view of the mountains of the Fiemme Valley.
We set off again from the Krabes Alm along the same path, then immediately take the path that descends rather steeply to the left until we join path no. 9. We take this path to the left to pass below the Krabes Alm. After about 150 m, we turn right onto path no. 6, which descends towards Altrei. The descent is quite steep through the forest.

(6) After a wide bend to the left, you join path no. 5, which you take to the right (Höllweg) towards Altrei.
Once you reach the pastures, you come to a crossroads where you keep to the right, staying on path no. 5, which leads across the fields to the first houses in Altrei.
Cross Im Kreuzacker Street and take Enn und Caldiff Strasse opposite, following it until you reach Gottschalkstrasse.

(1) Turn left onto the route back along the same path as on the way there to return to the car park (S/E).

Worth a visit

Beautiful panoramic views.
Altrei is a charming little village with a beautiful church at the end of the main street.
In San Lugano/Neu Radein, on the SS48 towards Montan/Auer, there is a small craft centre with a shop run by an artisan butcher (Martin Speck) where you can buy cured meats, wines and other local produce. Light refreshments available. Open even on Sundays.

Wide, pleasant trails with varied landscapes, forest and meadows. The inn is beautifully located, the ideal place to eat on site or have a picnic. The descent is a little steeper at times but remains very accessible for all ages.
