In the Jabron State Forest

The Jabron Valley stretches from west to east, between the Montagne de Mare and the Baronnies Orientales to the north, and the Montagne de Lure to the south.
This walk explores the northern slope of the Jabron, starting from the charming village of Saint-Vincent-sur-Jabron. A short, one-kilometre round trip to the Col Saint-Pierre (the highest point) offers views of the Baronnies and the far south of the Hautes-Alpes.

Description of the walk

(S/E) Starting from the village square (town hall, war memorial, post office, boules court, open-air café), head towards Rue Principale and follow it to the right, north-west, as far as the gendarmerie.

(1) Head up to the right along the tarmac-surfaced Chemin d’Aubard to the hamlet of Pralonguet, choosing whether or not to take the sections of the GRP® path that cut across some of the hairpin bends.

(2) Take the GRP® path on the right, which heads towards La Faïrotte and the Col de Saint-Pierre.

(3) There are no signposts at this crossroads of paths. Continue straight on. The path continues to climb until it reaches a flat area at the 1258 mark. The landscape gradually opens up and the route offers a lovely view at the point where the path becomes a track.

(4) Take this track on the left – initially grassy, then stony – as far as the second junction. Turn left to climb for a few hundred metres to the hamlet of La Faïrotte, at an elevation of 1288.

(5) Carry on straight ahead to the Col Saint-Pierre, from where you can see the first peaks of the Hautes-Alpes.

(6) Retrace your steps back to the hamlet of La Faïrotte.

(5) Carry on straight ahead for 100 m, then take the track opposite, which descends towards the hamlet of Saint-Martin.

(7) Turn right, then immediately left. Follow the yellow-marked trail. The path cuts across the track’s hairpin bend. Take care, as a little further on, the route leaves the track again to descend to the right, towards the Fontaine de Couaïs.

(8) Walk up the path and, at the corner, follow the path (yellow markings) to the right, which leads back onto the track a little further on. There’s a lovely view of a rocky peak on the right-hand side. The route continues to descend towards Saint-Martin.

(9) At the unnamed crossroads, which is signposted (with wooden directional signs), take the track that descends to the right, and ignore all the (private) paths leading off to the left or right.

(10) At this bend in the track, you have a choice:
- return to the starting point by continuing along the track;
- take a path running along the edge of the ravine. It is this more challenging path that is recommended here. Please note: avoid this route in wet weather as it is very stony and at times very narrow and very close to the ravine. At the end of the path, take the track which quickly becomes a small road leading to the centre of Saint-Vincent-sur-Jabron (S/E).
