Camoël - Car park at the southern entrance to the dam.
(S) Walk along the pontoons to the end of the marina and cross the stream on the footbridge.
(1) Turn left at the top of the steep slope and follow theGR® marked trail to the next stream. The route follows the riverbank as close to the water as possible, sometimes climbing up to overlook the lake created by the Arzal dam.
(2) Cross the Coulée du Bourg stream, climb up the hill opposite the bridge and turn right before the water treatment plant fence. Walk along this fence to the access gate, then turn left and head back down towards the Vilaine. The descent is steep and slippery in wet weather, and the log staircase is in very poor condition. Caution is advised in this area.
(3) Go around and then cross the Grand Palud, a meadow by the water's edge used for hay and grazing animals. This part of the Vilaine was maritime before the dam was built, and the marshes (meadows) where you will walk at times are now undergoing significant erosion due to the removal of marine sediment deposits. Reach the Isle.
(4) From L'Isle, the path becomes steeper, alternating between passages at the foot and top of the hillside. Cross the village and descend to the left towards the slipway via a stony path. The paved slipway is located at the end of the path that branches off to the left at the bottom of the descent (boats in dry dock and moored). Continue your journey through chestnut and pine woods to Culan. From here, you can access the river and enjoy a beautiful view of the old customs house buildings on the opposite bank. The local lord used to collect tolls from boats travelling upstream towards La Roche-Bernard.
Continue along this pleasant path through the woods to Stéry, then Kernélo, taking care on the steep section before the village. Motorised vehicles have severely damaged this section, where stones roll underfoot.
(5) After passing through the last hamlet, descend towards the Ran Coët stream, which you cross via a footbridge slightly upstream from the confluence.
(6) The path continues through the woods to the village of Rosquet.
(7) Turn left at the exit of the hamlet and head towards the port of La Roche-Bernard. A Japanese-style footbridge across a marshy section of the Vilaine riverbanks adds interest to the route and precedes the arrival at your destination.
What a surprise to discover the rock that gave the town its name, from the water's edge, on the opposite bank of the harbour quay! In season, a group of old boats welcomes you as you take your final steps. Arrive at the Voûte de la Roche-Bernard car park (E).
