Bassan Cross

A demanding route, but not very well travelled. It can be done as a return trip to the Croix de Bassan for a medium level of difficulty. It can also be extended by going to the electricity pylon. Beautiful view of Roquevaire and Sainte-Baume.

Description of the walk

Depart from the priory car park, on the edge of the D43D, Route de Saint-Jean de Guarguier.

(S/E) With your back to the car park, turn left then right onto Chemin de Saint-Jean. Keep left at the next crossroads, walk alongside a plot of old vines and find a path on the left just before the hairpin bend in the road.

(1) Take this path and follow it until you reach a road. Continue to the right and, after a few metres, take the path on the right to arrive at the foot of an aqueduct.

(2) Pass under it and continue along the path that climbs up the valley until it meets another path.

(3) Leave the main path and take the path on the left (cairn). Follow it uphill, where it widens, and continue to the mine.

(4) Head left and climb steeply to reach the Croix de Bassan (follow the cairns).

(5) From the cross, continue to the right on the ridge or slightly below (visible tracks) until you reach the summit.

(6) Shortly before the summit, a descending ledge leads to a couloir. Follow it at the beginning, then quickly exit to the left onto easy slopes and follow a good path to a fork.

(7) Descend on the path to the right until you reach the high-voltage power lines at the bottom of the valley.

(8) Continue on the path downhill to the right until you reach a fork.

(9) Continue to the right and descend to the bottom of the valley until you reach the route you took on the way up.

(3) Continue downhill and follow the same route you took on the way up to the priory car park (S/E).

An interesting route that avoids the overly "rolling" itineraries (DFCI tracks and monotonous paths) of the Sainte-Baume massif. A beautiful ridge walk where we encountered no difficulties, except for the orientation, which requires a minimum of attention.

Not marked, just a few old markings in places. No idea about private properties, but down near the castle there are joggers and people walking their dogs. Plus a few hikers.

Hello, is the route marked? If not, are there any private property crossings? Thank you.
