Crêtes de La Raye

Hike through the forest to the ridges and their highest point at 1015 m. Beautiful views over the Rhône Valley and the Vercors Massif. The descent then follows a wide forest path before arriving in a roadless grassy valley where wild horses and Highlander cows live side by side.

Description of the walk

A car park with around fifteen spaces is available to hikers at the hamlet of La Rivière, the starting point of the hike.

(S/E) Return to the road you arrived on, turn right, then left about a hundred metres further on.

(1) Do not continue along the road (private property), but take the path on the left running alongside this property.

(2) At the junction, turn left and rejoin the tarmac road at Chemin des Bourbous.

(3) Follow the road in the same direction, cross the hamlet and continue along the path through the cultivated field. At the end of the field, take the wide path on the right and continue to the hairpin bend.

(4) Take the shaded path on the left, leaving the private property on your right. Reach the hamlet of Les Gauthiers.

(5) Turn right to follow the forest track which climbs towards the ridge and joins it at a small clearing.

(6) Cross the clearing, leaving the forest road climbing up to your left and the hut to your right. At the far end of the clearing, take the path on the right climbing into the forest towards the La Raye pylon.

(7) Leave the path that descends on the other side and take the track heading right into the forest towards the Raye pylon. Follow the ridge through the forest to reach the west-facing orientation table: Rhône Valley, Ardèche. Caution: some vertiginous sections at the top of the ridges (see photos).

(8) Continue along the ridge. To admire the view of the Rhône Valley, take the small path to the left of the station’s fence.

(9) Retrace your steps for a few metres and head down to the left, taking the forest track; you can cut across several bends by following the path that serves as a shortcut. Reach the junction with the Chemin de Marquet (elevation 774).

(10) Turn right onto this forest road towards La Boussière.

(11) At the entrance to the hamlet (where you’ll see horses and Highland cattle), take the path on the left into the forest. Fifty metres further on, at the junction of three paths, follow the middle one, leaving the path on the left that climbs towards the Rocher de Saint-Supière. Two hundred metres further on, the path leads onto a forest track, which you should take on the left.

(12) After a short climb, the forest road is no longer clearly visible. Take the forest path on the left to rejoin it a little further on. Continue to a gate.

(13) To the right of the barrier, take a path that winds down to the hamlet of Les Arthauds and the junction you passed on the way out.

(2) Take the path on the left which runs alongside the property you already passed on the way out.

(1) Continue to the right to return to the car park (S/E).

A few difficulties at the start in finding the path.

A beautiful hike, but best done when it's not too hot. You need to follow the GPS carefully, as in some places it's not very clear if you just follow the directions in the description.

Thank you, Chantal, for your comments.

Indeed, around points 10-11-12, the information provided by the yellow hiking signs is sometimes inconsistent. It even appears that some signs have been modified (the original black direction arrows have been erased and other directions have been added in black marker). To avoid getting lost, it is best to follow the GPS route.

After a long but smooth climb, partly shaded, we reached the ridge with magnificent views.
There are not many sections along the side of the cliff.
The start of the descent on a good path goes well, but between points 10, 11 and 12, a few additional landmarks would be welcome. There even seems to be a discrepancy between the explanation and the GPS. We preferred to follow the GPS directions.
