Description of the walk

Departure from Jozonière, road D743, between Beaufort-sur-Gervane and Lozeron.

(S/E) From Jozonière, take the path on the left. Further on, after passing two houses, the path bends to the right, then diagonally to the left, then climbs northwards and leads to a tarmac road. Continue straight ahead. At the three-way junction, turn left and head for Lozeron.

(1) Continue left, following the signs for Serre du Bois. The wide path is flat at first (view of the Saoû syncline), passes Rama, then climbs up the hillside.

(2) At the Serre du Bois signpost, continue straight ahead uphill towards Vautour. Turn left onto the path. At the edge of the woods, continue along the track that runs along the left side of the field and find the start of a path on the right.

(3) Take the path on the right. Enjoy the view of the village of Gigors and the Savel Plateau as you climb northwards.

(4) At the Vautour signpost, take the forest track on the right towards Perrache. It climbs through the undergrowth, winds along the hillside, passes a sheepfold and crosses the plateau. View of the Diois and the Saoû syncline.

(5) At the Perrache signpost, descend opposite, towards Lozeron.

(6) At the La Côte signpost, take the path on the right down to Lozeron. 260° panorama from left to right over the Rocher du Vellan, the pyramidal summit of Merly, the perched syncline of Saoû and that of Saint-Pancrace.

(1) At Lozeron, retrace your steps along the route you took on the way up and descend to the car park (S/E).

Worth a visit

FLORA - Extraordinary orchids.
The Gervanne Valley is a favourite spot for orchid lovers. Around forty species can be found here, representing almost half of the varieties present in the department. Among this botanical anthology, the Lozeron mountain hides two gems: the Drôme ophrys – Ophrys drumana – endemic to south-eastern France, first described in Plan-de-Baix, and the remarkable trident orchid – Neotinea tridentata. Both species are protected at national level. The sunny grasslands are also home to a rich calcicolous flora with strong Mediterranean affinities.

A day hike with no particular difficulty. Sunny, and partly through a pine forest. Beautiful views of the Gervanne.

As soon as you leave Lozeron, what surprises you is the silence, which is so restful! Just occasionally, you hear a few cowbells and, of course, the cries of vultures! We had a picnic at the highest point of the hike, just before the descent, and saw them dancing their ballet (a little too far away for our liking).
As a bonus, there were some beautiful views.
A lovely day and an easy hike.
Thanks to the person who organised this walk.

An easy and pleasant hike, but not remarkable. Lacks interest and variety, perhaps because it is located in an exploitable area.
Trails are easy to follow but markings are sporadic, alternating between yellow-green and yellow-red. Lots of undergrowth with a few clearings offering beautiful views as described. More extensive views of the plateau and mountain pastures, but electric fences on either side of the path prevent you from stopping. Very few places to take a break.
The narrow, hilltop village of Lozeron offers few parking options. If you want to avoid the junction with the village at the start of Jozonières, it is better to start from point 4, known as Le Vautour. At the intersection with the D732, there is a large car park with several spaces. In this case, take the D732 from Gigors and Sagnol rather than the D743 from Beaufort.
A few details:
- At point 2, the path joins another path at a right angle. Turn right (yellow-green markings on a tree opposite). The Serre du Bois signpost is a few metres further up.
- At point 3, the path that branches off to the right is narrow but runs alongside a barbed wire fence.
The paths are mostly unpaved, with lots of eclectic fences lining them.
The walk seems much shorter than indicated, especially if you start from the village. There is also less elevation gain. Average time: only 3 hours (30 minutes maximum).
Disappointing, no notable orchids along the entire route.
I wouldn't really recommend it, as there are more beautiful walks to do in the area.

Once you reach marker 5, it is worth climbing further north for 15 minutes (there and back) to discover the magnificent landscape of the Ambel plateau with its three peaks!
