A lovely hike, mainly through the woods, allowing you to discover the Chartreuse de Currière, a little-known monastery, and enjoy beautiful views of the Chartreuse from the ridges.

Description of the walk

In Saint-Laurent-du-Pont, take the Route de Fourvoirie (D520B) towards Saint-Pierre-de-Chartreuse. After about one kilometre, take the small road that climbs to the right (Route Forestière de la Charmette). Continue straight on to the end of the road where you will find the Currière car park.

(S/E) Take the road opposite, which is closed by a barrier. About 100 metres after the barrier, take the path on the right (post with a yellow arrow): this is the Sentier des Agneaux. It winds through the woods, with the slope becoming steeper at times. A few gaps in the trees offer glimpses of the monastery. Continue along this path.

(1) When you reach the top of the hill, the path turns right. After a short descent, the slope levels out and crosses a fairly flat section, still in the woods.

(2) When you reach the point called "la Salle à manger" (the dining room), take the forest track on the right that climbs into the forest towards the Col des Charmilles. Keep following the main track. The slope is fairly constant throughout. After a while, the track turns into a path that winds its way up through the forest. At this point, you are almost at the Col des Charmilles.

(3). From there, you can see the Grande Sure, which you can reach by continuing straight ahead across the meadow. For our hike, turn right onto a barely visible path that leads to the Crêtes des Charmilles. There are white markings, but they are not very visible. The path is not very well marked here. Follow the ridge, where gaps in the trees offer views to the east and west.

(4) At the end of the ridge, take a small path that branches off to the left and descends into the rocks for a few metres, then back into the woods. This path winds downhill and is very poorly marked in places. The slope is sometimes steep and the path is uneven, so caution is advised. Follow this path all the way down through the woods, following the yellow markings on some of the trees.

(5) At the end of the descent, after passing a few fallen trees across the path, the trail joins a wider grassy track that marks the end of the steep descent. Take this track to the right (northeast).
Continue straight ahead on the grassy track, which turns into a dirt forest track. Pass a stone with a Latin inscription "Sapinus Terminoru" (Borne du Sapin des Termes on the map). Continue straight ahead on this gently sloping track. It then joins the Chemin de Nonne.

(6) Arrive at the Belvédère de Nonne, which offers a beautiful view of Saint-Laurent-du-Pont and the Guiers valley. Continue along the track, which winds down a gentle slope to the car park (S/E).

Notes

Most of the hike is in the forest, which is pleasant in dry weather to enjoy the coolness, but should be avoided in wet weather as rain quickly makes the path muddy.
Walking poles are recommended to help with the descent through the woods after the ridges.

Worth a visit

The Chartreuse de Currière is a former monastery of the Carthusian order, now a monastery of the Bethlehem family. The monastery is not open to visitors. Only their monastic craft shop is accessible.

Nearby, there is also the Grande Chartreuse Monastery and its museum.

It is possible to extend the hike to the summit of the Grande Sure, accessible from the Col des Charmilles (signposts at the pass).

Hike done this autumn in the opposite direction. Perhaps it was safer given the humidity?
The downhill lamb trail was not a problem (walking sticks). However, there were many uprooted trees.
Unfortunately, I was unable to enjoy the view from the Nonne lookout point (clouds).

A varied and wild circular route, mostly in the forest. Follow the Chemin des Agneaux / Col de la Charmille / Cul de Lampe / Chemin Forestier and Belvédère de la None. The start is quite steep but the path is well marked through the scree (not recommended for children) to the Col des Agneaux, then crosses through the forest on a balcony path, which is quite difficult as there are many uprooted trees across the path. Take the Petite Vache track to the Col des Charmilles. Great view of the Grande Sure. Descend via La Prairie and Cul de Lampe (some exposed sections) and continue north towards the Belvédère de None, then follow the track to the car park.
For experienced hikers, this route does not present any major difficulties, but be careful in rainy weather, as the ground is slippery and often sloping. For other users, it requires more concentration to navigate this type of terrain, which is sometimes exposed but well marked. I do not recommend it for children.
I think that the direction taken and mentioned above is better for a balance of effort (ascents and descents) and at the end of the hike, descending Les Agneaux with fatigue in the scree should be problematic and risky.

Beautiful wild circular loop in Chartreuse.
Be careful when descending the ridges; I do not recommend it if the ground is wet. It is even worse if there is still snow.
Also, be sure to wear long trousers and use tick repellent. The area is infested at this time of year (late June)!! especially on the ridge trail and on the descent where vegetation has reclaimed its rights.

67-year-old hiker. Completed the route on 6/4/24, within the time indicated on the signs. There is still snow on the ground and it is very wet, which can quickly make the descent on the St Joseph de Rivière side tricky. Trees have fallen and the path is poorly marked. Otherwise, beautiful views of the Chartreuse, Belledonne and the plain of St Laurent du Pont.

No problem following the route with the description
However, I would advise against it after a rainy day as it is likely to be very slippery.

Hello, thank you for your review of this hike.
The path downhill after the Charmilles ridge is indeed quite difficult to find, as it is very narrow and sloping. Your comment is very useful in that it warns future hikers that there may be some difficulties on this part of the route.
However, when I described the route, the path was not damaged by machinery at all, but I have noticed that more and more pretty little paths are becoming large logging tracks lately... It's a shame, as it's much less pleasant to walk on this type of track...
Best regards
Astrid

As is often the case in Chartreuse, the directions are not obvious. The first part of the route is well described. There are few signs (unless you know the area) to help you find "La salle à manger": cross a first stream and continue along the main path on the hillside.
Once again, there are few signs to help you find the Col des Charmilles and the Crêtes des Charmilles. The descent is where things get tricky: the path is very narrow and sometimes disappears due to fallen trees and a lack of signage. When you find the track again, still with no signs, it is completely ruined by logging and you will exhaust yourself in the mud. The path is almost impassable until you reach the Belvédère de None. The forest track is fine again from the Belvédère to the Chartreuse de Currière.
It's a very pretty hike, but at the moment, it's a real pain!

A lovely route, mostly through forest in a little-visited area, offering interesting views of the Chartreuse de Curière and the main peaks of the Chartreuse. The climb is a little tough. As for the descent, it is quite steep at the start and could be dangerous in wet weather.
