(S/E) From the car park, head west following theGR®46-GRP® Midi-Quercy. This is the Chemin de Fontalès.
Off the trail
(1) Leave theGR®46and continue straight ahead on the wide track. This runs alongside the Aveyron river and below the D115. Stay close to the river at all times. The track becomes a dirt path. At the end, the path curves to the left before ending on the departmental road. At the road, turn right and follow it to the tunnel entrance.
(2) In front of the tunnel, turn right onto the path. Keep an eye out for the narrow path that climbs up to the left a few metres after the junction. The ascent begins with steep steps. The very steep path continues in a series of switchbacks. At the foot of the cliff is the famous "Ouf" slope, which you can climb or scale with the help of steel cables in places. You will need to use your hands on the rocks at times. A sign saying "OUF" (in capital letters) at the top of the slope marks the end.
Continue for a few dozen metres until you come to a yellow cross sign on the left. Take the "forbidden" path and finish the climb.
(3) At the crossroads at the end of the climb, go back 200-300 metres to the right. It is not necessary to go all the way to the viewpoint to enjoy the view of the Cirque de Bône. Retrace your steps. Continue straight ahead.
At the clearing, turn right and descend towards the caves.
(4) At the junction in the bend, stay on the wide track.
(5) At the fork, take the left-hand branch. Ignore the two paths that cross. Continue for 350m to reach a left-hand bend at an elevation of 290m. Continue downhill along a stream. You will arrive at the D115. Cross the departmental road with extreme caution.
(6) Continue down the grassy path opposite to approach the Aveyron. The river will remain below the track. The track runs halfway between the D115 and the Aveyron. You can approach the river, taking care, for a midday break.
At the house at elevation 122, go around it and come out onto the D115. Proceed with great caution along the road for 300 metres, crossing the Aveyron, until you reach the tunnel entrance.
PR® signposting - Yellow
(7) In front of the tunnel and just after the bridge parapet, climb up the dirt track on the left. The path runs alongside the Aveyron, then moves away from it to join the service road to Viel Four.
GR46 Red and white markings
(8) Enter Viel Four and exit, reaching the Route de la Corniche and crossing it. From this point, a long climb begins on a wide stony track.
(9) Ignore the private road on the left at elevation 254 and continue straight ahead. The climb ends when you reach an open area with a trail entrance on the right.
(10) Continue quietly along the same track. Ignore all paths leading off to the right or left. You will come to a crossroads with a choice of paths leading down to Saint-Antonin.
(11) At the signposts, take the left-hand path downhill, which is shared bythe PR®21andGR®46 trails. This is a steep, zigzagging descent through the woods. Stop in front of a statue of the Virgin Mary to enjoy the view of Saint-Antonin. Continue downhill to the departmental road.
Cross the D115 very carefully. Go down the embankment to return to the starting point of the loop.
(1) Walk right on Chemin de Fontalès towards the car park on Avenue de la Gare (S/E).
