Cornettes de Bise from Bise

One of the most beautiful hikes in the Chablais! A long and demanding route, where you walk in sumptuous surroundings. From the summit, the highest in the region along with the neighbouring Mont de Grange (2,432 m), there is a superb panorama of Lake Geneva, the Chablais peaks, the Swiss Alps and the Mont Blanc massif.

N.B. Route within a protected natural area: see recommendations in the practical information section.

Description of the walk

Starting point and access:
From Vacheresse, follow the road towards Bise/Ubine then Bise. Traffic is prohibited shortly before the Bise chalets: park diagonally in the car park on the side of the road.

Signposts are located at major intersections

(S/E). Continue along the road towards the chalets and cross the old car park. Cross a stream via a concrete bridge near the Refuge de Bise.

(1) At the corner of a livestock building, follow the GR®5 trail to the right towards Pas de la Bosse (red and white markings). The trail climbs southeast, with a steady but regular slope, to Pas de la Bosse, where there is a grassy plateau.

(2) Continue along the hillside on the left (south-east; leave the GR®5 trail descending to the right towards the south). Reach the foot of the Couloir du Séraukin.

(3) Enter this very steep couloir, on a path that winds between small boulders and large rocks (difficult going in wet weather). Reach a small grassy plateau at the exit of the couloir, with a bird's eye view of the Chalets de Bise.

(4) The path then turns right. Cross a small ledge with an easy scramble. Climb up on the left and, via switchbacks on terrain that is half grassy and half stony, reach an unnamed pass.

(5) Cross the pass and continue on the south-east slope. Follow the path on the left (eastbound). Walk through a mainly rocky environment, with short exposed sections, until you reach the summit.

(6) Then climb north-west and you will soon reach the summit.

(7) Begin the descent via the same route.

(6) After a few hairpin bends, keep to the left to descend eastwards to Pas de Chaudin (yellow Swiss hiking trail sign), on the southern edge of a valley (Chaux du Milieu).

(8) Take a well-marked path into the valley towards Taney (there may be snowfields in early summer). Descend into the valley heading east-northeast.

(9) Turn left (east-northeast) and wind your way between small rocks. Then turn sharply left (west-northwest) to reach a sort of promontory above the Loz chalet (altitude 2000).

(10) Then head due west and follow a well-marked path through the mountain pastures. The path then turns north and then north-west, climbing up to the Col d'Ugeon.

(11) Follow the path heading south-west towards the Chalets de Bise. The descent begins with a moderate slope. Pass a pond on your right, then follow a stream on your right (Ruisseau de Bise on the IGN map). The slope becomes steeper and the path winds several times before reaching a flat area (marker post). Pass a pond on your left and you will come to the edge of a large clearing with spruce trees.

(12) Follow the gap on your right and squeeze through the shrubs. At the end of this area, the Chalets de Bise are clearly visible and the path descends more steeply through the pastures. As you approach the chalets, cross a stream (marker post). You will soon reach the first chalets.

(1) Continue straight ahead and pass the Refuge de Bise. Cross the river, cross the old car park and continue along the road to the starting point (S/E).

the signage along the route, particularly on the uphill sections, seems inadequate, especially given the more technical and exposed passages

A very beautiful but long route with panoramic views of the entire Chablais and Mont Blanc ranges. Returning by the same route is not recommended as it is a bit challenging

A steep climb, but one that leads to a superb panorama.
The pastries at the inn at the start of the hike are a must-try!

Definitely my best hike in Chablais, maybe because it wasn't the easiest .
Do it in this direction: I came across someone coming down in the other direction, so you need to have sure footing and know where you're putting your feet.
A gentle warm-up (it's still quite a climb) before tackling the Serouquin couloir. Watch out for stones that can roll under your feet. It's a steep climb but there are no vertiginous sections (although these come soon )
After the couloir, a grassy flat section is welcome for your legs. Be careful not to miss the path that branches off to the right (towards point 3) to cross a small ledge (use your hands, but it's not very difficult).
After the unnamed pass (4), it's best not to be afraid of heights. The trail isn't difficult overall, but it's narrow and there's no room for error. One or two passages are tricky, as the trail disappears and you need to find one or two footholds to get past the weathered rock (be careful if it's raining). The passage is equipped with anchor points (recently installed judging by their appearance) but you need to bring your own ropes as there are no chains in place.
The end of the climb requires you to stay alert on the ridge, which is not particularly difficult but narrow in places.
The descent as proposed is not difficult and allows you to enjoy the ibex and the landscape.
I missed a path between points 8 and 9 (I kept heading north rather than north-west :O ) but easily caught up with the path I could see through the easily passable mountain pastures at this point to reach the Col d'Ugeon.
The GPX track is spot on, if you follow it you can't go wrong

Magnificent hike!
Best done in dry weather to avoid any difficulties during the short "aerial" section.
The route is perfectly marked – no surprises
Thank you!

The physical route and splendid scenery met our group's expectations. As we were ahead of schedule, we reached the Col de Bise from the Col d'Ugeon via the ridge trail and the Tête de Charousse. I recommend it.

A very pretty circular hike where the effort is rewarded by the beauty of the landscapes.

I did a variation (relatively easy overall) by starting the route at Lac de Fontaine, then continuing on to the Refuge d'Ugine and its pass, then passing under the Pointe de la Bose before reaching the Pas de la Bose.

The climb up the Saix Rouquin couloir is long and steep in places, but there are no technical difficulties (at most, you need to watch your step). Small red chamois markings guide you all the way up (but they are a little faded due to weathering).
After the unnamed pass (point (4)), the route continues over steep sharp limestone pavement requiring great caution and where false steps are not an option. You then need to be careful on a few chaotic sections before reaching the path leading to the summit.

After the Pas de Chaudin (point (6)), there may still be some late snow: this was the case for me, where I encountered snow almost from the start on a steep slope requiring caution, then regularly in the Chaux du Milieu area, and then again more sporadically almost as far as the Col d'Ugeon (point (9)). The use of a GPS (for example, via the Visorando app) was very helpful for orientation at times.

Thanks to the author for the excellent description of this route.

A magnificent classic!
A delicate little section lasting three minutes, during which you can't afford to make any mistakes and which requires a minimum of flexibility and agility.
I highly recommend doing this hike from 12:00 to 18:00 on a beautiful summer day, and then eating at the Auberge des Cabrettes located at the starting point. The value for money and the welcome are excellent, but you have to like well-fried potato fritters! Personally, I'm still drooling over them.

A very beautiful circular route. The climb is not particularly technical for experienced hikers. It is best to do this hike in the direction indicated as the descent would be more dangerous (slippery path, weathered rocks). There are a few people at the summit. The descent on the Swiss side is very well signposted and very pleasant (very few people).
At point 9 (Col du Jonc), we did not follow the suggested route (descent via Planchamp), but opted for the Tête de Charousse ridges (airy but safe) to the Col de Bise, where we descended via a marked path to the Bise chalets (about 100 metres of elevation gain and an additional 2 kilometres).
In total, approximately 12.5 km and 1,150 metres of elevation gain.

Great tour.
It starts with a steep climb, then winds its way to the summit.
Magnificent view.
The descent is longer, allowing you to enjoy the scenery and the view of the Cornettes.
Great trip.

Please note that this hike should only be undertaken safely in the direction indicated (anti-clockwise). Although the ascent of the Saix Rouquin (or Serouquin) couloir does not pose any major difficulties, the descent must be undertaken with extreme caution to avoid falls, which could be fatal given the steepness of the slope. Be particularly careful of rock falls caused by humans or ibex, very loose ground, false tracks, steep sections and loose stones underfoot. The descent via the Pas de Chaudin on the Swiss side is easy if the snow has disappeared from the north face, which is only the case late in the season.
Also be aware that the second part of the circuit is on Swiss territory, where some GPS applications no longer work.
Overall, a very beautiful circuit.

three tricky sections on the way up explain why it is rated "very difficult"; not a busy route (the weather was uncertain...)
On the way back to the large valley after the summit, we encountered numerous ibexes, which were not very shy.

A beautiful hike, but not to be done in wet weather. Some sections are difficult for people who suffer from vertigo; chains would be useful to make them easier to navigate.
