Description of the walk

Starting point and access
From Vacheresse, follow the road towards Bise/Ubine then Bise. Traffic is prohibited just before the Bise chalets: park diagonally in the car park on the side of the road.

Directional signs are located at major intersections

(S/E) Continue along the road towards the chalets and cross the old car park.

(1) Cross a stream over a concrete bridge and leave the Refuge de Bise on your right. At the corner of a livestock building, continue straight ahead towards the Col d'Ugeon (leave the GR®5 trail on your right towards the Pas de la Bosse). Cross a stream (marker post) and climb steeply through the pastures. Further on, squeeze through the shrubs and follow an erosion gully on your left. Follow a stream on your left and you will reach a pond on a flat area.

(2) Leave the pond on your right and continue climbing steeply through the pastures and along the stream. Towards the end, the slope becomes gentler. Leave a pond on your left and reach the Col d'Ugeon, on the border between France and Switzerland.

(3) Descend towards the Chalets de Loz. Pass a few ponds, keep heading east-southeast and ignore all the paths on the right.

(4) At the Chalets de Loz, turn sharply left towards the Pas de Lovenex. Leave all the buildings on your right and, at a fork, keep left. Climb north-west towards Pas de Lovenex. From the pass, there is no view of Lake Lovenex: follow a path on the right for a few metres to a small promontory above the lake. Do not continue east beyond the promontory (rocky outcrops).

(5) Begin the descent from Pas de Lovenex via a few steep hairpin bends on a path through the grass.

(6) At the fork that appears shortly afterwards, turn left (west-northwest; do not descend to the right towards the lake). Cross an area of scree and a dry river bed. Pass at the foot of the Grande Miette (a slender, isolated peak that is easy to spot). Walk along the mountainside to reach the Col de la Croix.

(7) Then turn left towards Novel and descend into a small valley. Make a wide hairpin turn to the right and descend steeply along a stream (which may be dry). You will reach a signpost.

(8) Then turn left (do not take the more obvious path on the right). Descend along the Morge stream (which may be dry) and, after about 100 metres, turn left to cross it. In doing so, you will cross the French-Swiss border again and immediately arrive at an intersection.

(9) Turn left and follow the GR®5 towards the Chalets de Neuteu (red and white markings). Enter the forest and climb up several hairpin bends.

(10) At the next intersection, turn left with the GR® and climb up a series of tight switchbacks. Go around a rocky outcrop on the left and climb more gently up to the Chalets de Neuteu.

(11) Cross this group of chalets, leaving Lac de Neuteu below on your left. You will reach an intersection.

(12) Turn left towards Col de Bise, still following the GR®. Ignore a path coming from the right and continue climbing to the pass.

(13) Descend on the other side towards the Chalets de Bise. Follow a few steep switchbacks, then descend the steep slope. Pass a small hill on your right and head south-east.

(14) At a fork, continue towards Chalets de Bise. Cross a fairly flat wetland area. Then descend along an alpine track to the chalets.

(1) Turn right, cross the old car park, and follow the small road to the starting car park (S/E).
