Combe de Lioux, Château Saint-Lambert and Falaise de la Madeleine

Discover the Combe de Lioux, which is narrow in places, with its natural caves, as you walk in the cool shade. Leave the valley to cross the cedar forest and reach the Château de Saint-Lambert, a former sanatorium that has been abandoned and vandalised. After a descent, you will reach the Falaise de la Madeleine, a remarkable site with an impressive view of the village of Lioux and a 360° panorama.

Description of the walk

Go to Lioux via the D60a departmental road and park in the car park below the road with a few stone picnic tables.

(S/E) Follow the D64a to the right for about 50 metres and take the second road on the left going uphill. Pass above the Lotissement de la Combe housing estate and continue to the bend, then follow the dirt track for about 20 metres to reach the start of the path on the right (yellow and red markings).

(1) Follow the GRP® de la Pierre en Vaucluse trail and enter the Combe de Lioux.

(2) Follow the well-shaded valley, with caves and narrow passages along the way, for about 4 km until you reach a crossroads (elevation 526).

(3) Leave the GRP®, ignore the path that branches off to the left and continue straight ahead to reach the Coteau de Ragagnade crossroads (signpost).

(4) Ignore the path that branches off to the left at the Col de la Ligne and continue along a relatively wide track until you reach the Teissonnières crossroads (signpost).

(5) Head towards Javon on the right on a relatively wide track for about 800 m until you reach a crossroads (elevation 665).

(6) Take the forest track uphill on the right, ignore the tracks on the right and left, and after a steep climb, you will reach a flat area in the cedar forest and come to a crossroads.

(7) Follow the track on your right, which is relatively flat at first, then after a descent, you will come to a relatively flat section and reach thefirst houses of the Château de Saint-Lambert, which is clearly visible.

(8) Climb towards the houses to reach the Château de Saint-Lambert. Pass the gate pillars to find the access road.

(9) Enjoy the view of the region. Continue along the road for 300 m and, in the bend, take the path downhill to reach the road below.

(10) Keep right on the D140 road for about 1600 m and, after the left-hand bend, about 100 m further on, head for the clearly visible power line.

(11) Go down under the line, which allows you to avoid the road and rejoin it at the hamlet of Cantarel.

(12) Follow the road straight ahead until you reach a three-way junction.

(13) Turn left until you reach the bend.

(14) Leave the road and follow the ascending track, passing a well on your right, until you reach the start of the Falaise de la Madeleine.

(15) Follow the green markings on the ground, admiring the landscape and the cliff faces. After a descent, you will reach the crossroads at the Ancien Moulin de Lioux (signpost).

(16) Continue to the far right towards Lioux below the cliff. Pass the cemetery, take the path on your left, and rejoin the road and the car park (S/E).

Walk taken in October, during the week. Didn't meet a single person except for hunters.
A great walk that alternates between walking in the forest (with beautiful autumn colours) and walking on the hills (second part of the route).
The walk took me 4½ hours, including a 30-minute snack break, walking at a brisk but not excessive pace.
The hike is not technically difficult, except perhaps for the length of the route.
