Gorges de la Véroncle starting from Joucas

A very beautiful loop (technical in places) in wild gorges with varied and pleasant trails that alternate between undergrowth, a hamlet, pools in the bed of the Véroncle and mills in picturesque gorges. At the request of some hikers, I have classified this hike as 'difficult'

Description of the walk

The start is 4 km from Murs. From Murs, take the D 102 A towards Joucas. About 500 m from the village, turn right onto a small road (signposted Le Mourre Blanc) and park at the end (start ofthe GR® de Pays Rouge et Jaune trail heading east).

(S/E) Follow the pleasant trail for 500 m to the intersection (signposted La basse Auvières).

(1) Turn left (GR® de Pays) and continue for 800 m to reach Baume Brune.

(2) Then descend to the left (south-west) on a winding path to join the Bois d'Audibert track, which you follow for barely 200 m before continuing on the red and yellowGR® de Paystrail through pine forests, olive groves and meadows before reaching the pretty hamlet of Les Grailles.

(3) Then begin the approach to the gorges heading north for about 400 metres, continue along the red and yellow trail which climbs up to a balcony, then turn right at the signpost onto the trail which zigzags down to the bottom of the gorges. 300 metres further on, you will arrive at the Moulin Cabrier (ruins), which you must go around on the left. The path then follows the superb béal (water channel) carved into the rock.
You will then reach a ladder with ten rungs that leads to the Pas de Marie-Hélène overlooking the gorge. You will need to use your hands from time to time. Be careful on the rocks as they are slippery. Continue along the path through the gorges, crossing over and following the balcony paths to reach a narrow passage that you must descend, equipped with steps and cables, to return to the bed of the gorges.
The trail markers continue through the sometimes lush vegetation and lead to a magnificent wide canyon (or ravine).

(4) Continue through the wild gorges at this point to reach the ruins of the Jean de Mare mill.

(5) Take the path that leaves to the left of the mill to reach the intersection of the paths at the signpost, Jean de Marre. 200 m further on, take care to turn right (yellow markings) and cross the gorges via a path that is not very clear at first...

(6) Climb the steep but short path to the intersection (Lauzière) with the track.

(7) Take the track on the right for about 500 m, then turn left (Les Trois Évêchés sign).

(8) Descend this path through holm oaks to the boundary marker (Les Auvières).

(9) Continue eastwards (towards Joucas) to reach the La Basse Auvières marker (already seen on the way there).

(1) Continue straight ahead to return to the vehicle left at the start (S/E).

Notes

Do not attempt this route in stormy weather.
There are a few tricky sections where you need to use your hands, but they are easy to navigate.
One of my favourite loops because it is very varied and wild in the Vaucluse mountains!
The difficulty rating is average, but the few equipped sections could be considered difficult.

Worth a visit

This hike (in the middle of the gorges) already exists on this site, but this very pleasant loop allows you to visit Joucas (a very beautiful village) and, above all, avoids the wide, unpleasant Bois d'Audibert trail... Be sure to read the recent reviews as the terrain seems to have changed. As soon as I can go back, I will make the necessary changes (particularly at point (6)). Thank you for your valuable feedback!

A very pleasant route, but it deserves the rating 'difficult'. However, after the last mill, it becomes difficult to find the path, but the solution is to follow the yellow trail, which takes you on the right path after a long but not very difficult zigzag climb.
However, I would advise against doing this route in wet weather as it is slippery.

A magnificent hike on a beautiful December day, highlighting the wonders of nature and the ingenuity and hard work of man. This route should be classified as difficult for people who are not experienced in mountain hiking and/or are not in good physical condition. Be sure to bring the right equipment (hiking boots are strongly recommended). Do not attempt in wet weather, as most of the gorge trail is on slabs that can be very slippery.

Magnificent hike, do not venture out if it is raining, as the rocks are very slippery. Otherwise, moderate difficulty.

Hello everyone. Thank you very much for your feedback. At the request of some, I have classified the hike as 'difficult' and added some details to the description. As soon as I can return, I will modify the comments (particularly point 6, which has changed)... In the meantime, I invite you to read the recent reviews.

I noticed that I'm not the first to say that this is not a moderate hike, but a difficult one. Will you change the level on the description sheet? Not everyone takes the time to read all the comments before going on a hike.

In my opinion, this trail should not be classified as moderate but rather difficult. Once in the gorges, there are many complicated passages that are difficult for an average hiker to navigate, as they border on rock climbing.
At point 4, 200 metres after the Jean de Marre mill, the path on the right is blocked (yellow ×). It is better to stay on the path marked with a yellow line, which is more pleasant and joins up with the blocked path

A very beautiful hike that I did with my daughter. We loved it.
Admittedly, some sections are tricky, but we weren't bothered by them. However, you do need to be careful and be prepared for a bit of climbing up and down.
The walk combines fairly strenuous hiking with superb scenery and welcome cultural information boards. It's really very good.
As mentioned in other reviews, the signage has changed in places, so it's important to read it carefully beforehand. But by using the Visorando app to draw a trail of the hike that overlaps the map, you can quickly see where to go and if you've taken a wrong turn. It's a great tool. We also missed the path back up towards the end, but that's how we quickly realised and found the right trail.
As an aside, the Puits de Cata was very close to us, and we turned back before reaching it to return to the original route. It seems that it might be worth going a little further and climbing back up to that level (after researching this famous well on the way back).
Finally, like others, we had trouble finding the starting point (Mourre Blanc is marked on the IGN map, but we missed it). But we also realised too late that the hiking signs in the area have a (very) small sign at the top indicating the name of the place. The one we were interested in is on the right-hand side of the road, shortly after Joucas in the direction of Murs. We saw it clearly as we drove past, but it was impossible to read the name from the car.
All in all, it was another superb hike, thanks to those who described it.

Good route, the GPS meter reads 11.55 km. We turned around after 250 m, which means we have to subtract 500 m. That leaves 11 km on the meter and our route is the same as on the map. Spot the mistake. Very nice walk, with a few challenges that are not so easy. WE RECOMMEND IT.

The hike is indeed very beautiful and easy to follow as you can always find the GR trail markers. The description is reliable but could perhaps do with an update, as there are probably some sections that can be avoided if there is no water in the riverbed. The final path leading back up to Joucas is not that short, but it is steep.

However, I must warn you that the difficulty level does not deserve to be classified as "medium"! The other hikes through the Gorges de la Véroncle, which you can easily find on Visorando, are marked as difficult, and in my opinion, this is much more accurate. You can also check out the reviews on Google (https://goo.gl/maps/dZAremdHMcX2DmY27), which are more cautionary. The technical sections mentioned in the description are actually the easiest parts of the route, as there are metal steps and cables to help you along. On the other hand, progressing through the gorges is sometimes more like climbing, which is not easy and can even be dangerous at times. You must not be afraid of heights either, as it is sometimes very steep.

A wonderful hike enjoyed by a senior couple and their 12- and 14-year-old granddaughters.
Everyone had a wonderful time...
Allow extra time for contemplative hikers and photographers.
The route through the gorges is quite physically demanding.
At point 3, a marker has been placed to indicate the path on the right.
Of note, at Moulin Cabrier, there is a beautiful cave below and to the left...
Many thanks to the author for sharing.
