Parking on the RD 459, just before the Hotel "Le Belle Vue" located at 2 Route du Col, 68160 Sainte-Marie-aux-Mines. The departure point is opposite the car park.
(S/E) Wisenbach National Forest 772 m / Marcel Sternberg and André Boudet memorial stone.
Take the path on the right (blue-white-blue rectangle) for a short, easy climb. The Sainte-Marie-aux-Mines national necropolis is 100 m away. Continue to the crossroads.
(1) Hegelau - Rest camp
Turn right onto a flat path towards Lion/Abri Robinot (blue-white-blue rectangle).
After about 20 metres, you will see the tomb of Max Richter.
At Lion, continue straight ahead (do not climb, stay on the same path).
A little further on is the Soldiers' Wash House (on the right below, clearly signposted).
(2) Soldiers' Wash House (914 m). About 300 m further on, descend to the right towards the Robinot Shelter (blue and yellow disc).
The path climbs again.
(3) Cabane du Robinot (875 m). Continue straight ahead (Blue Disc; the Yellow Disc leads you to a spring below).
At a bend on the left going downhill, note two cavities on the left.
(4) At the intersection, do not take the Fenarupt/Sainte-Marie-aux-Mines direction, but climb to the left following the blue-white-blue rectangle signs towards Tombe du Lieutenant André De Gail/Chaume de Lusse. Be careful, the slope is steep! After a sharp left turn, go up to the right. After a steep climb, when you reach the intersection, turn left towards the Tomb of Lieutenant André De Gail. The path is wide and clear.
(5) Take the path on the left where you will find the Tomb of Lieutenant André De Gail.
Climb after the tomb; the path is winding and covered with moss. There are many small fir trees and beautiful views. When you reach a plateau with a patch of recently cut fir trees, take the path to the right that descends.
Further on, follow the blue-white-blue rectangles and take the path uphill towards Chaume de Lusse.
(6) A little further up, follow the dark blue rectangles towards Col de Sainte-Marie-aux-Mines.
Beautiful viewpoint, much of which has been deforested. Beautiful descent, but watch your ankles!
(7) At the end, turn left. You will see La Croix Jardon (a woodcutter who fell from his tree).
Continue to follow the dark blue rectangles towards Hegelau/Roche des Chèvres until you reach a crossroads you already passed on the way there.
(1) Head towards Roche des Chèvres opposite. Be careful, the climb is steep!
(8) Viewpoint at Roche des Chèvres. Continue towards Château de Faîte. Discover a cave along the way.
(9) Adlerhorst machine gun post (there are others below). After the descent, you will find yourself back at the car park (S/E).
