Col du Figuier via the Source de Fontestorbes from Bélesta

A short walk through the forest around Bélesta, passing by the Fontaine de Fontestorbes. We start with a section of the Tour du Pays d'Olmes, continue via the Col du Figuier to rejoin the Hers Valley path for a short while, before returning to Bélesta.

Description of the walk

Start from Square du 19 Mars 1962, or Place du Général de Gaulle; both car parks are located on either side of the town hall.

(S/E) At the fork in the road, on the corner of Square du 19 Mars 1962, take the street on the right, pass number 13 (Rue Traversière du Casteillat) and, at the end, turn right (Rue du Castellat). Follow this path (Sentier du Tour du Pays d'Olmes), leave the village and reach a three-way junction.

(1) Take the path on the left and continue towards Fontestorbes. Reach the River Grand Hers and continue along it, slightly above the water, until you come to a fork with buildings on your left.

(2) Turn left, cross the footbridge over the Hers and discover the Fontestorbes Fountain.

(3) Then return to the fork after crossing the footbridge again.

(2) Take the Sentier du Tour du Pays d'Olmes on the left and head straight on, still overlooking the river. Leave the forest and follow its edge to Fougax. Head straight on, along Rue Saint-Michel, to reach the Place de l'Abreuvoir, with a fountain.

(4) Take the Chemin de Gervés on the right, leave the village and, at the Fork in the road, turn right towards the forest. Climb up to a building (Barthole).

(5) Continue along the path that climbs and reach a fork at the Col du Figuier.

(6) Continue along the path on the right which descends into the forest and reach a Fork in the road.

(7) Take the path on the left and reach a track suitable for vehicles.

(8) Turn right, walk for about 50 metres and, just before the house, head down to the left (Sentier de la Vallée de l'Hers).

(9) About 20 metres before the Ruisseau de Méde, take the path on the right which climbs slightly. At the track, turn left and head towards the edge of the woods.

(10) Head straight on, past a farm, and continue along the tarmac. Take a sharp left-hand bend, then look for the start of a path on the left just after the bend ends to the right, directly beneath a power line.

(11) Take this path, pass under the power line and head down through the undergrowth.

(12) At the fork, turn right and continue along the hillside. Then follow the crest of the ridge to reach the car park at Square du 19 Mars 1962 (S/E).

As of today, the path is accessible but very poorly signposted. Between points 1 and 4, follow the GRP Pays d'Olmes trail (marked in red and yellow). The climb between points 4 and 5 is very rocky and often wet; I recommend using walking poles (especially if you’re going downhill). I can confirm there are a few small brambles and nettles at point 5 (wear long trousers). A few pink markers in the forest from point 9 onwards.

A rather disappointing route, except for the Fontestorbes fountain, which alone is worth the detour. The route mainly runs through woods and forests, with few or no signposts along the way; the Col du Figuier is not signposted and offers no views whatsoever. A fairly steep climb for very little reward☹️☹️☹️

A hike on a very hot day, around 30 degrees.
Plenty of shade. No particular difficulty.

I found this hike difficult because of the terrain!

A lovely walk, mainly through woodland, of moderate difficulty; relatively flat from point 1 to point 4 at Fougax (some sections can be muddy in wet weather); the climb from point 4 to point 6 takes 30–40 minutes and is fairly steady, with a few steep sections but always in the shade of the trees. Note a short section at point 5 along the brambles; a walking stick will be useful to push them aside. Descent via forest tracks, quite steep immediately after point 6 but then fairly gentle. There is the option of a shortcut via the path between point 8 and point 10. As the path after the fork at point 11 is unfortunately quite impassable at this time of year, disappearing into tall grass, ferns and brambles, we finally opted for a gentle descent to Bélesta via the road. The route took 4 hours 15 minutes.
