Description of the walk

The start of the hike is in the hamlet of Les Gourniers, accessible via the D241 road from the village of Réallon, not the Réallon ski resort which is on the other side of the valley. Park in the car park just before the bridge over the Réallon torrent (toilets).

(S/E) Cross the bridge. Turn right, passing the restaurant, the park visitor centre and the small chapel. Continue along the tarmac road to the last building in the hamlet.

(1) Continue straight on along the path as you leave the hamlet (ignore the path on the right, which you will take on the way back). Shortly afterwards, the path runs above the stream.

(2) At the Saint-Marcellin Chapel, continue along the path which remains overlooking the stream.

(3) At a fork, take the path on the left which runs above the path leading to the Pré d'Antoni hut.

(4) Detour due to an administrative closure. Turn left, leaving the closed path that used to lead to the Cabane de Vieille Selle.

(5) Pass close to the Nouvelle Cabane de la Vieille Selle. You are now off the trail, but simply head towards the Barle (west, slightly south) and continue climbing through the sparse pastures to reach the edge of the Combe de Baume Longue.

(6) Go round this valley on the right to reach the Col de Barle (not physically signposted on site). Note the Barle (2733m) above you to the south-west, and the Aiguille (2793m) to the north.

(7) The return journey follows the same route back to the entrance to the hamlet.

(1) Do not enter the hamlet, but turn left to see the giant’s kettle formed by the rushing torrent.

(8) Cross the bridge over the torrent and turn right onto the Discovery Trail, which takes you back to the starting point at the car park (S/E).

A visit to the Giant's Kettle and the Pissarotte waterfall is a must...
A shepherd and his (very well-behaved) dogs at the Nouvelle Cabane de la Vieille Selle.

Be careful not to miss the path on the left about 500 metres past the chapel, then another 300 metres further on, taking another left at a right angle. The main path straight ahead has been deliberately blocked by a large pile of stones (dead end, potentially dangerous). Make sure you take the path uphill to the left. After that, it’s straightforward. Go to the right of the new hut, then head straight towards the ridge across the fields. At the top, follow the mountainside to reach the pass: magnificent views of the AUTANES, ORCIÈRES and ARCHINARD.
A very beautiful hike and absolutely no one around.

A lovely walk, a very pleasant path, magnificent views, a river... and to top it all off, blue skies and sunshine... The only downside!! There are no more marked paths near the end.

A lovely, unspoilt walk amidst the horses. We only went as far as St Marcelin Chapel, as beyond that point we would have entered the Écrins National Park, where dogs are not allowed.
