Description of the walk

Car park at the Pierreclos cemetery, situated on the road to Serrières.

(S/E) Return to the Serrières road to go round the cemetery. Immediately turn right onto the path that climbs alongside the cemetery wall and continues steeply uphill through the vineyards to the first junction.

(1) Turn left onto the yellow-marked path that runs alongside the vineyards and leads to a bend that takes you to the houses below.

(2) Leave the track, climb up the embankment and continue through the vineyards for about 100 m.

(3) Turn left towards the last houses in the hamlet, cross the Route de Ruère and continue straight ahead to join the Route des Margots.

(4) Turn right onto it and take the path that crosses through the vineyards again. Reach the Route des Monterrains, cross it and continue straight ahead, crossing through more vineyards before reaching the edge of the forest.

(5) Take the path leading uphill straight ahead into the woodland and follow it through to the exit.

(6) Keep left, join the Route de la Combe Berthaud, follow it uphill to reach and cross the Route de Tramayes (D31). Continue along the Rue des Monterrains for about 100 metres.

(7) Turn right before the farm, rejoin the Route de Tramayes and follow it for 100 m. Leave the road and turn left onto the Chemin des Gravats, which runs behind the first house. At the end of the tarmac road, stay on the track that continues along the path without taking the footpaths branching off to the right or left. At the first vineyard plot you come to, walk alongside it, heading uphill to the right for 100 m.

(8) Turn left into the wide passage between two vineyard plots to join the track visible below. Follow this track to the right until you reach the tarmac road. Take this road, which winds round the houses of the hamlet of Les Provenchères, to reach the Route de la Forêt.

(9) Cross it, continue along the path that branches off to the right, running parallel to this road, until you reach a small stream.

(10) Cross the stream and head into the undergrowth, which forms a canopy, onto the path that climbs steeply. You’ll reach the first fork.

(11) Carry on to the left, then turn left again a few metres further on. The climb is still steep! You’ll reach a forest track.

(12) Cross it, continue climbing for about 200 metres before heading straight down again to reach the track leading to La Mère Boitier.

(13) Take this track, known as the Vieille Route, on the right and stay on it until you reach Les Fougères.

(14) Take the tarmac road on the left to join the Route de Tramayes. Continue to the left, going uphill along the road, for about 200 m, until you reach the picnic area.

(15) Leave the road and take the path leading uphill. At the first fork, keep to the left, begin the descent and arrive at a five-way junction.

(16) Carry on straight ahead, veering very slightly to the right onto the flattest red dirt track. (Do not take the track on the left which goes downhill.) Continue round the hillock to join a track that leads uphill.

(17) Do not take the track leading down to the left, but carry on straight ahead along the path towards La Chanalle and Bourgogne. After 100 m, ignore the path coming from the right and reach the next fork.

(18) Turn left onto the path which climbs steeply as it enters the forest. At the first fork, turn left; at the next, keep right to come out onto a track. Follow the track until you reach a clearing.

(19) At the clearing, leave the track and turn left onto the path which continues to climb to the highest point of the walk (altitude 746), where a makeshift aerial stands. Follow the path downwards; at the first fork you come to, turn right into the fir trees. You’ll reach the forest track.

(20) Carry on to the left along the path, which begins to descend. Continue straight on until you reach a forest track (signs for ‘Lamartine et amis’).

(21) Take the track on the left, continuing the descent. Pass the two houses at La Brosse au Parc and reach a fork in the path.

(22) Take the track leading down to the left.

(23) Continue down the slope until you reach the Col des Enceints.

(24) Turn back for about 300 m.

(23) Turn left onto the path that leaves the track to join the path running above the one taken on the way there. Turn left onto the path that leads into the fir forest. At the first fork, leave the main path and turn right to join a clearly defined path at right angles.

(25) Turn left onto this path and follow it downhill for a few metres, then turn right. Follow this path past a house called ‘Les Maréchines’ and continue up the concrete track. When you reach the top, at a flat area, continue down this concrete track until you reach the path that branches off to the left before the bend.

(26) Leave the track and take the steeply sloping path on the left. Stay on the path until you reach the Route de Tramayes. Follow the road downhill to the first house on the right at an X-junction.

(27) Before the first house on the right, leave the county road and take the path on the far right. Cross the leat, using the small bridge if the water is too deep. Continue along the path as it climbs. At the first junction, go straight on; at the second, turn right for 30 metres.

(28) Head downhill to the left, through the vineyards along a wide path for about 50 metres, then turn right. Follow the path alongside the vineyards to reach the cemetery car park (S/E).

An interesting and varied route with some lovely panoramic views and not many roads.
The return leg from 23 to 24 doesn’t add much.
At point 10, the path forming an arbour is no longer accessible. You need to head up into the field, following the path below on the left. When you can go no further, you’ll need to find a way over the barbed wire to rejoin this path. Then, up to point 11, the path is not very well maintained.
As noted by Christian Perret, the elevation gain is around 730m.

Hello,
Thank you for your review. It’s a shame you didn’t enjoy the coolness of the woods on this hike, which is best done in summer.
The elevation gain is calculated on the FFR website.
I hope you continue to enjoy your walks.
Kind regards,
RandoYvIsa

A rather uninteresting walk as it spends too much time in the woods. A few lovely views, but not many... The elevation gain is overestimated – only 720 m D+... Completed in under 6 hours, including various breaks.
